  • My GPS exploded!

We are in the middle of a heat wave here in NY. Tuesday I was travelling upstate to Watkins Glen (beautiful area, by the way and the Harbor Hotel at Watkins Glen is just lovely).
The temperature in the car was set to 72. It was 99 degrees outside when we stopped for lunch. We were only in the restaurant for about half an hour. When I came back out to the car, the GPS screen had shattered. It was on the console so I know it wasn't dropped. Behind the broken screen you couldn't read the writing at all.
I am thinking perhaps the rapid change in temperature from cool to hot caused this? My laptop was in the trunk and it was fine.

Wow, was this an in dash model or stand alone?

My iphone overheated the other day when I left it on the dashboard while driving.
It shut itself off. I thought I killed it but I resuscitated it with the AC on full blast.

Whoa. I always wonder about the heat and tech stuff. We keep our GPS in a slot on the center console, down by the seat, and the slot seems to be made for just that kind of use. But most people do have the GPS on the dashboard or the windshield. Was it lying down flat on the top of the dashboard? Or was it up in a mount?

Thanks for the warning. Taking about an 8 hour drive through an area that will probably be in the upper 90's. Will take my GPS with me when I stop for any extended period.

Also, remember to crack your windows when parked or you might have a shattered windshield or back window.

You are so lucky that only the screen cracked!

                Wow - I guess I am lucky.
The GPS wasn't on the dashboard, it was laying on top of the console. It wasn't plugged into the charger. But I guess with it being 99 degrees outside, it was a lot hotter inside the car.

Pat, I never heard about cracking the windows, but I'll remember it now!
