  • Gas Rationing

    Here we go....

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/1...n_2094696.html

Due to the high demand of gas post-Hurricane Sandy, New York City and Long Island will begin gas rationing on Friday morning.

If your licence plate ends with an even number, you can only purchase gas on an even-numbered day. If your licence plate ends with an odd number, you can only buy gas on odd-numbered days.

New York City Mayor Bloomberg signed an emergency order instituting gas rationing on Thursday.

"This is not a step that we take lightly," Bloomberg said, as reported by The New York Times, "but given the shortage that we will face for the next few weeks and the growing frustrations of New Yorkers, we believe it is the right step."

The rationale behind the decision was explained on his website:

Hurricane Sandy caused significant flooding and damage to petroleum infrastructure throughout the tri-state region – causing refineries to shutdown, pumping stations to lose electricity and terminals in the region to close. Since then, the majority of the region’s pipeline and critical infrastructure has been restored and power has returned to Buckeye pipeline, a major interstate pipeline that serves New York City.
As the region’s petroleum infrastructure continues to come back online, gradually increasing the supply of available gasoline, the City is implementing the odd-even system – starting 6:00 AM on Friday – to accelerate the recovery of the distribution network and ease disruptions and wait times for drivers attempting to fuel their vehicles. The Mayor made the announcement today at City Hall.

“Last week’s storm hit the fuel network hard – and knocked out critical infrastructure needed to distribute gasoline,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Even as the region’s petroleum infrastructure slowly returns to normal, the gasoline supply remains a real problem for thousands of New York drivers. Earlier today, I signed an emergency order to alternate the days that drivers can purchase gas, which is the best way to cut down the lines and help customers buy gas faster.”

According to the press release, the odd/even rationing will remain in effect until further notice.

Flashback to the late 70s. I was allowed to take the family Buick but only if I was also willing to wait on hour+ long lines on even days to fill her up.

NJ (Bergen County) has had odd/even in effect for at least the last week. It has helped with the lines.

Were you able to get back to your car and get fuel?

My car is still where I left it last night (I hope). Someone at work has a can of gas, she's going to take me in a bit. I have a printout that says that as of 1 pm, the station had gas. If not, I'll borrow enough to get home and leave the car for a while. Fortunately I don't really need it. I heard that people are now selling gas on Craigslist. Unreal.

and here I am with .90 off a gallon courtesy of stop & shop. Problem is finding a station that honors it that actually has and can pump fuel!

Good luck getting the car home.

A colleague left early and is about to run out of gas on line with 80 cars ahead of him. Crazy.

I thought you New Yorkers didn't drive cars.

Bloomberg is coping Christy on this one. IMO it works but it should have been done sooner.

We shouldn't, but I have a reverse commute outside of Manhattan. It takes three times as long to get there by public transport, and the neighborhood could be better.

I'm feeling guilty now that I didn't think to warn you guys about the gas problems after a hurricane.
I've definitely learned the hard way that I need to fill up both cars and that way we always had gas.
I do remember going into the next county to buy gas but I guess that isn't an option for you guys.
