  • The 25 Worst Airports In America........

It's that time of year again: Thanksgiving, a chance to catch up with friends and family, gorge on turkey, and endure an exhausting travel schedule. That also means it’s time for The Daily Beast’s annual rundown of the worst airports in America. You might not be able to avoid these terminals, but at least you can factor in extra travel time and have a few stress balls handy.

To find the 25 Worst Airports in America, we started by looking at the busiest airports, based on Airports Council International data, for an initial pool of nearly 50 sites. We then took into account six factors: on-time performance for arrivals and departures for 2012, and on-time performance for arrivals and departures during the most recent busy travel holidays (Presidents’ Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, winter holidays), with data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics—accounting for 80 percent of the final ranking. The remaining 20 percent was split between the most recent airport comfort and amenities study by JD Power and Associates—with scores re-ranked within the pool of nearly 50 airports—and the median maximum security wait time during peak periods, with data from Flight Explorer.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Every survey comes up with different results, but some airports are regulars on these lists. I think they have the DC area airports in the correct order with Dulles the worst. It has been referred to as a ''Third World airport'' on FlyerTalk. I always try to get my flights into Reagan National instead, even if it means an extra leg. One recent survey I saw had BWI as one of the twenty best airports in America, but this survey has them amont the 25 worst. They are out of sync with what seems to be the consensus on FlyerTalk that Newark is the least bad airport in the NYC area, and JFK is the worst, but all NYC airports are on their list of 25 worst.

Personally, in flying AA, I rate the desirability of flying through their gateways in this order from best to worst: MIA, DFW, ORD, JFK. When I flew NW, I rated the desirability of flying through its gateways in this order: MEM, MSP, DTW.

A couple of years ago, the staff of the In Your Pocket guidebook series voted on the worst airports in Europe, and had Heathow the worst, followed by Bucharest Banesa (the LCC airport there), and Gdansk. I agree completely about Banesa which is the worst pit I have ever seen as an airport. Heathrow can be a royal pain, but is worth it if you have access to the BA Galleries lounges there, as I do. I have flown in and out of Gdansk and am still puzzled why it is on their list.

Why does Sacrament greet you with a 4-legged skinned turkey? Oh! It's a skinned bunny. Well alright then.

I won't fly around the holidays, but going on family grumbles, O'Hare being many times worse than Midway is spot on.

We hate SFO with a purple passion. They cost us 2 days of a Paris stay with their delays.
