  • What was it like for you returning to a place after a long absence?

Some of you might know that I was born in Singapore. I left for Australia when I was 22. Been in the US since 1993. I haven't been back to Australia. While living in Australia, I stopped over in Singapore on my way home from Europe. Was with my 18 month old first born. It was hot and crowded. I hated it so I cancelled my hotel reservation and caught the first plane back to Australia.

Last summer, I went back to Singapore. This time with the two younger boys. If they weren't with me, I would have left. While it was fun, though emotional catching up with family I hadn't seen for 30+ years. I didn't really enjoy myself. There was no feeling of coming home as the place is unrecognizable. I should have prepared myself and made believe I was going there for the first time. The middle child (17 years old) was doing a 2 week work experience at a hospital there and my eldest was meeting us there for his birthday (4th of July), so I couldn't even shorten the vacation.

The only thing I really enjoyed was the food. Still cheap and available everywhere. We did the tourist thing ... Singapore Sling at the Raffles, chilli crabs, rode the cable car to Sentosa, visited the Marina Bay Sands. If anyone is visiting, I have 4 subway cards with money still in them available.

Can I give a shout out for the Holiday Inn near the Istana? We were supposed to stay with my elder sister but since she's still a bitch, we left and stayed at the Holiday Inn. The staff were always friendly and went that extra mile. I guess it was strange to have us stay there for 3+ weeks. They upgraded us with their "executive package" (free buffet breakfast, afternoon tea and cocktail hours, free wifi & use of the executive lounge, free laundry for 2 pieces of clothing) the first 2 weeks and gave us the Club Suite & "executive package" the last week. When I mentioned that the towels they provided were small for boys that were 6 ft tall and built like footballers, they bought bath sheets for us. They also gave us a big bar of soap. They also made sure I had fresh fruit, chocolates (lindt) and bottle of wine in the room. Of course I tipped very generously

I don't think I would ever go back again.

Anyway, to answer your question, Marina--I grew up in Missouri, and this year my husband and I are going there to take one of our children to camp. We're going to see the town where we grew up, and my old school, and the homes where my family lived. I don't know anyone there anymore, and although I've googled some of my classmates, I'm not going to be looking them up. I just want to see the old places. So I'll have to let you know in the fall!

Singapore intrigues me for some reason.
Maybe cause I watch Joseph Prince.
Also watching all those HGTV real estate shows is quite interesting to see how the rest of the world lives.
But I can understand it not feeling like home. It isn't for you anymore.

Sometimes as immigrants (my family included) we tend to not call America home.
My grandparents did that and instead of buying a home in NYC and putting down roots they went back to their native land for retirement.
Spent more than 30 years "going home".
That's a lifetime spent in NYC with lots of missed opportunities to own their own home over that time because of their mentality.

        Guess what?
After retirement They spent half the year renting an apartment in Miami and living in both places cause they were too Americanized to live full time in their "home" land. Lucky for me I feel no ties to the motherland and love the good old USA as my one and only home.

          New York, second time around

Went to New York with the husband and younger kids for Spring Break 2008(?). This was my first visit. At that time, Boston was my favourite US city as I loved the architecture. We did the tourist thing ... went up the Empire State building, walked down 5th & 7th Avenues, saw Times Square, harbour cruise etc. I was impressed. Loved it.

Last year, for the first time, the company that Dr. K works for had a Christmas party that included spouses/significant others, so I went. The company is based in Stamford,CT, so we flew into La Guardia and took the train to Stamford. We overnighted in New York the day before & after the party. It was cold and crowded. You didn't really have to walk as they crowd would push you along. It was disappointing. Because of the crowds, I missed seeing the shop windows. What I saw of The Tree was not impressive. Looked better on TV.

I don't think I would be going back to New York any time soon

Well, wait a minute now. I work in New York...on that second trip, you were in the heart of the super-crowded Christmas tourist season. To me, that's not the best part of the New York experience. So I wouldn't write off New York because of that.

I can't go back to where I spent my first eight years-the city is there, but the neighborhood is now part of an interstate highway. I wouldn't want to go back anyway.

I went to my elementary school. I knew it had closed down long ago but I didn't expect to see "no trespassing" signs with a drawing of a person/guard shooting trespassers. My parents generation were the last folks to buy single family residences. A lot of those bungalows have been bulldozed to make way for high rise condominiums.

I didn't look up any of my friends, but then again, I left Singapore without telling anybody. I really hope your experience will be more pleasant than mine.

I didn't really want to go back but the boys wanted to see where I came from. The flights and most of the hotel were paid with points. It ended up being a cheap vacation. We also went to Bali. The boys now understand why Hawaii and the Caribbean don't excite me. It's only 10 degrees here.

I can see my elementary school on Google Earth, and it still looks about the same. So does our old house...they closed in the carport and made a garage. Otherwise, all about the same.

I did think of you all and looked for the Chinese restaurant ... Woh Hup or something like that? Can't remember what that guy's name was. He was a cop. I promise to be less anti-social and will give more warning when I visit some place.

I just read on facebook that the New York Archdiocese is closing my (and my mothers) elementary school. My grandmother was the first PTA president there in 1930. My mother founded and ran the first library in the school in 1965. My father was on the first 'parish council' that gave a say in the running of the school/church to the local people - and he also ran bingo there to raise funds for many years...."Home" can never be the same as our memories.
