  • PRICELINE how to

Two elderly couples heading to Troutman, NC. We want decent accommodations for 3 nights without breaking the bank.

I see how to book a hotel, but don't see where there is a choice for getting a room with two queen beds, for instance.

I find no selection for number of beds in the room. Do we just take whatever Priceline gives, or am I missing a step?

Just asking, hoping to learn something.

There's no way to choose that, usually. Sometimes there will be a tag that says BED CHOICE on an offering on Hotwire, but not on Priceline.

I will say that we generally have not had any trouble getting two beds in the room. We call the hotel a couple of days before to ask, and we remind them when we check in, and so far we've always gotten what we wanted with Priceline. However, technically, Priceline only provides a hotel room that will sleep 2.

When you start your search, be sure to enter 4 adults as the number of travelers. Then you have a better chance of getting a suitable room. Sometimes Priceline will stop you at that point to tell you that Priceline rooms only sleep two, but sometimes not.

We usually do one night in the summer to get a place with a pool around my son's bday. Last year we got a Courtyard with one queen bed and one pull out sofa. We asked if we could switch to a room with two beds and was told that it would cost $99 more to upgrade. On the website the one bed room was listed as $99 and the two bed room was listed at $129.

How annoying. We just stayed at a Courtyard and at least 90 percent of the rooms were just like you describe--one queen bed and a pullout. (They were doing maintenance work on one floor of the hotel and all the rooms were open, so we could see inside.) I don't think they have many rooms with two real beds.

How accommodating the Priceline hotel will be also depends on how full they are. If they're half empty, they're more willing to give you what you ask for.

Will now inquire on Hotwire. Thanks.

Priceline now has a thing called Express Deals. You go to the regular Priceline home page and enter a hotel search. Priceline comes up with a regular list of hotels and prices, and at the top it says Express Deals. Click on that, and you'll see a blind listing with prices and amenities, much like Hotwire listings. There might be something in there that would help you.

Try www.booking.com Their prices are often within a few dollars of winning Priceline or Hotwire bids--and you know exactly what you are getting and where it is, etc.

Doesn't always work. We tried that with a hotel in San Francisco. They could/would not give us a room with 2 beds.

This occurs most frequently with urban hotels. Often the rooms are so small there isn't room to put have two beds, so the inventory is limited and the rooms they do have with two beds go for a stiff premium. In suburban locations I usually have no problem whatsoever getting a room with two beds when I use Priceline or Hotwire. And I usually ask for a room with two beds if available because when I'm traveling on business I use the extra bed as work surface for documents and files.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

                    “You shouldn't wear that body.”

Did you use Hotwire or what? Seems like a good deal.

As long as we are talking priceline - I have a priceline account.
I want to book a room for DH and I will not be with him to check in.
                        We have different last names.
Should I open a second priceline account in his name?
Or will they let him check into my room?

I don't think he needs his own account. I think they ask you the name of the guest when you make your request. I know that's how it works for car rentals as I've always made them using my pricline account, but with dh as the driver. You could check it out by starting a request and seeing if it asks for the name of the guest.

What Luanne said. AWhen you place your bid (and before you submit your bid in final) you should reach a screen that asks you for the name of the guest: IIRC it's actually one of the first screen you navigate through. That's where you enter the name of the person who will be checking in. Doesn't have to be the same as the person who is actually making the bid (or reservation).
