  • Wanna dance?

I recently started taking dance classes with my boyfriend and am having a lot of fun!!

I am of the rock n roll generation, where there were no 'dance steps', you just imbibed and moved as the music inspired you to. Like most people, I could fake my way thru a waltz if my partner knew what he was doing. But other than that, I have no clue, have always had to say "I can't dance." no one ever taught me (Dad's feet were horrible, I understand why I would not have been invited to have my feet on his).

Years ago my x said he would take dance classes with me but when I was ready to make an appt, he bailed on me, and refused to consider it again, so I let it drop, and wish I would have gone by myself instead.

Because I'm having a blast!! WE are having a blast (boyfriend is Into It, he also never learned any dances). We are going to Fred Astaire and I like the people and the methods. The group classes and parties are really helping to learn as we end up with different partners and almost always learn something from them. It's a great way to practice what we learn in private lessons.

While we are concentrating on Swing, we are learning basics of most major dance styles. We worked on spins most recently and so I am working to get over being dizzy. There was an "end the party" Merengue where I was spun the length of the floor and that was Some Fun!!! But I had to sit down for a bit.

Over the weekend I practiced my spins a lot as I'm trying very hard to not be dizzy, get my self pointed the right way and not trip over my feet. so far so good!!!

Is there anyone else finally learning to dance? If you are one that always wanted to, go for it. Fred Astaire may not be the low cost provider, but since they throw in so much more than the actual lessons that you pay for, it already seems to be well worth it, after just one private lesson and many opportunities to practice and learn more.

Extra bonus that it seems to help my sciatica vs hurt it.

Wow. Good for you! I don't think I have the nerve to attempt learning with my two left feet and all, but you are very inspirational. I think these dance competitions on TV have inspired a lot of people to get out there and try it and it certainly beats just watching the boob tube. Excellent!

Reminds me of a clip from one of my favorite movies:

Good for you. Whether you master anything, enjoy the moment. Life can be short.
I think it might be good at the TS4Ms get-to-gathers that we meet at a dancing place.

Good for you! We took a ballroom dancing class at a spa weekend a few months ago - I've been meaning to look into more regular lessons back home, but haven't found the time - thanks for the reminder!

The 2 left feet!!!! Yah, remember that! I love that actor, whose name I can never remember. Best In Show is one of my faves, also.

            ~~

They really do make it easy, and suggest "marching it" to get started and that really does work. I thought I would also be falling and stepping on people, but not so far!

We have much to improve on his leading and my following, as he seems to think that I can Just Turn Now, even tho I may have the other foot in the air... he has kept us from crashing into anyone, so, at least we are not a danger to others ; ) But a little time to react is necessary, especially if I ever go truly crazy and attempt the high heels. Broken ankle, anyone??

he also needs to be looser on the hand and Much Lower when I'm twirling as I almost got a broken arm on the first try - he flung his arm WAY UP with a grip on me and then tried to shove me under ... OWIE!!!! We're also working on our cues so we both know who is going where when. that will only work with us, as it seems that My Cue to Twirl with anyone else is when they put their arm up. Oh, that's me, right?

At first he wanted to hold me around the waist, which prevented my being able to do my steps, but we got that fixed up right away but then he insisted my arm was to be under his. no, no, that will never work... but he was trying to control me by moving my shoulder, which caused me a lot of back twisting (pain) and loss of balance. I think it helps that we dance with others as he is not likely to hold another woman at the waist and so it's easy for him to remember how to hold the partner. Plus, when he has a partner that knows what she's doing, it's easier for him to keep track of what he's supposed to be doing. Works that way for me also.

I am still trying to break him of "Left Left ..." as that is Right Right for me, he will goof me up! "Side Side" is much better. And lastly, he is working on keeping in mind that I Am Always Going Backwards, I cannot see what is coming, and backwards is Not a direction I am good at regularly. When we get to role reversal, he'll understand it better and see what it's like to take a sudden lead when you can't react and end up twisted or off balance.

I like the idea of "choose your style of concentration" but still Do All Of Them at group lessons and parties. You can also earn free private lessons by referring others that simply take them up on the One Free Lesson.

I'm looking forward to 'having a bit' we can do but it's plenty for now to nail some basics.

really, it's a lot of fun. if you've ever thought about it, give it a go. Worst case, you learn something useful.

oh, btw, I don't watch reality tv, so have never watched dancing with the stars or the like. That's not at all what prompted it For Us, but I can see how some folks like me, thinking "I have always wanted to ...." will find the inspiration.

I just wish I would have done this 20 years ago!!! Sure would have been less embarrassing at all those weddings I flubbed my way thru on the dance floor.

For years I have wanted to take ballroom dance lessons with DW, but on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high) her interest level is about -8.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

                  “You shouldn't wear that body.”

You could turn it around as a gift from her to you. "What I would really love for my birthday is to take dance lessons!" If she will commit to 3 or 5 or whatever it is, she might find that she likes it. At least at the start she would be doing it for you, which also is not bad motivation.

We make it into Date Night, so maybe she picks the restaurant and wine?

My x came up with one of the lamest excuses I had ever heard out of him: my feet are attached wrong to my legs so I cannot dance. Sheesh, just say you don't want to!

I do wish I would have gone without him years ago. You can go as a single as the instructor and other students are often singles also. When you come home smiling after a fun time, she may want to join you next time. not out of jealousy (I hope) but from a "I want to have fun With You" place.

Excellent!!! We have learned a bit of Hustle and I can do those turns much easier than Swing.

Did you just happen to learn along the way or did you take lessons at some point?

What Fun that you enter the contests!!
