  • Tipping Question - what do you think?

DH and I stopped at Chili's tonight. Our dinner came to $30, but we ordered takeout for my son and his wife and brought it to them. The takeout was $20 and was added on to the check, making it $50.
I only tipped $6, on the dinner we had. The server did not have to wait on 4 people, but she did put the order in and bring it to me.
What do you think? Was I a cheapskate?

No way. I know that there's a movement to tip for takeout, but I feel like I have to draw the line somewhere. Yes, they had to put it in a box and put the box in a bag. It's easier than bringing course after course to the table, refilling glasses and cups, urging more trips to the salad bar, answering questions, and remaining cheerful throughout a long meal.

When we get takeout, I put a dollar or two in a tip jar if there's one on the counter (maybe! only if they were really nice!), and I call it a day. In a situation like you're describing, with full meals plus takeout, I would do the same as you, tip on the eat-in food and off we go. I MIGHT add a dollar or two, or round up a bit, but that's it.

If service had been good, I'd do 20% on the dinners served and 10% on the carryout.

Or, if it's close to "even money", like $17, I'd give em $20, for carryout.

Really good service gets better tips, not encumbered by a %, but I also know that good service nowadays does not get the tips it used to.

I think that's about right. If the same server also handled your takeout order, you *might* have added an extra buck, but I probably would not have.

I agree but before I would add an additional tip for the take out order portion. I would check to see if the order is correct. Maybe a 10% tip if is correct.

$6 is probably what I would have tipped but I know dh would have ripped more. I think you did fine.

You did exactly what we would have done ~ $6. was a 20% tip ~ very generous. I hardly ever tip for take out. When eating in, if the service is real good, I don't mind leaving 20% ~ or even rounding that up if need be.

When I order takeout and have it delivered to me at my table by the waitress who already served me food, I tip 20% on the whole bill.

I don't tip on take-out. So in this case I'm with the group that says base the tip on the main bill only. And if the same waiter handled the takeout as well as the meal, I would add bit more for that service - there's added service involved in coordinating the two orders that deserves some compensation. But it's certainly not the same amount of service that would be involved in sit-down meal for the same order.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

                      “You shouldn't wear that body.”

What's the difference between a Canadian and a canoe?

                          The canoe tips more easily.

I tip for carryout and for pizza pickup, especially at local, repeat restaurants, and reaped the benefits. If I'm leaving for the season, I give them a bigger tip, like people give at Christmastime (or used to).

                            1. They know me when I call, and know my order. So, when I order, it goes something like, "See You in 15 minutes."
                            2. If they screw it up, they have a second, correct, order waiting when I get there. Same thing for DW. I just ordered a Florida pizza, from up here, and they had two waiting for her, the screwed up one and the correct one.

                            C'mon man!

I tip based on service. Good service- good tip, fair service-fair tip, lousy service-lousy tip or no tip at all.
