Nice, I have done the Vermont trip and it was spectacular. Stayed at Smugglers Notch the end of September. -
Which ones surprised you, Glitter?
I am not a big fan of the aspen in Colorado, or of most western areas, really, but I know they're popular with others. Part of what I love about the fall colors is how they filter the sun -- we have a big maple in our front yard, and every year we have days when the sunlight is like liquid gold.
You can get that in a big enough stand of aspen, but when we'd go there wasn't much color to look at otherwise -- greens and browns, of course, but no maples or other colorful trees, and no sweeps of bright autumn color from the ground cover, either. You went up "to see the aspen turn," and I was terribly disappointed to discover that that's about all you got! I wonder where that pic was taken; we clearly should have gone there... It's kind of funny that the prose for that picture is all aspen, but in the picture there's just a tiny strip of them way back behind the other trees. 
Vermont, the Smokies, Michigan, much more my speed.
I'd like to get out to Missouri, as well. I'm hoping it isn't as crowded as the Smokies can get!

Hobbitess, it hadn't occurred to me that so many not-northeast destinations would be included, but the Western ones were the surprises. I agree with you about the limited colors compared to some other areas. Or I'm just sheltered and narrowminded...

You'll have to come out and do the one in New Mexico. Heck, we need to do that one. This will be our first Fall living here.

We are starting our planning for a 7 week RV trip next year. We have a spot reserved at a campground in MA for 2 weeks starting at the end of Sept. The plan is to rent a car & go be leaf peepers and hit as many scenic drives as we can. There are a few small patches in downneast Maine near Acadia National Park with good color, we may spot more on our way home tomorrow. I'll be in the southern Berkshires Sunday or Monday to see how that's coming along.Comment

BD: My XILs have a luxe vehicle like that - they go all over in it and have the most wonderful retirement. I had the pleasure of staying in their prior one when we went to Yosemite with them many years ago. It was all good until my BIL hit the brakes while I was in the loo...Comment

have any of you ever driven to Bash Bish Falls in Berkshires, quite a drive especially since directional signs were all down for repainting, but saw some lovely colors. Also lovely colors driving up Rt 7 to Williamston and North Adams. (to see Moca and clark, unfortunately one closed and the other closed on Tuesday when we went. going to Lincoln NH on tueday so hope colors are at their prime then.Comment
