  • Fairway vs Trader Joes

The Nanuet Mall just down the road from me has been reborn into The Shops at Nanuet. Very, very high end stores. The pre-existing anchors, Macys & Sears, are the lowest end that it gets. We all need more chain restaurants don't we? Our first Bonefish, PF Changs and others.

I was hoping for a Trader Joes and got a Fairway.

At this time it is hard to figure out when to go. When the lot isn't mobbed and I'm weird about new supermarkets. It seems to take me overlong to learn the lay-outs.

I am interested in hearing how Fairway compares to Trader Joes. Price, selection, freshness, etc.

This is a bid to talk me into stepping foot in the place.

Fairway is much more vast and all-encompassing than TJs. I think of TJs as a little specialty place--even a big TJs is not one-stop shopping for us, bc they never have the variety of meat, fish, and produce that we need.

Fairway, by contrast, has EVERYTHING, in a range of degrees of fanciness, from plain old celery and Cafe Bustelo to super-fancy coffee and those teeny champagne grapes. And the prices are good. Meat and fish are excellent, and again, there's a range of choices and prices.

Our Fairway is over in Paramus, but if it were closer, we would go there all the time for food groceries. (For cleaning stuff and paper goods, we'd probably stick to ShopRite, although I think Fairway has decent prices on those, too.)

You should definitely go check it out after the crowds ease up a little!

Forgot to say that Fairway has a lot of prepared foods and an excellent bakery department. (To me, TJ's bakery department is the most disappointing thing in the whole store.) We just went to a party last month where they had gotten all the platters and baked goods from Fairway--all very good.

Lawren, is that the mall where the camp bus picked up? And we went to the diner across the street? We should meet up there sometime.

I love Fairway, wish I lived closer to one. When I was on L.I., I used to fantasize about moving closer to the one in Plainview. Heaven. Crowded heaven, perhaps.

Fairway has amazing produce, meat and fish, all at really good prices. Oh, and great cheese, too. And an olive bar. And and and. The TJ's near me is bigger on cool frozen things. They should put them in the same mall, that would be something!!! But if I had to choose only one, Fairway wins hands down by a huge margin. I am jealous!

The cheese! I forgot the cheese! That's a specialty of theirs.

Yup, Fairway is a great store! Lots of specialty items, from soup to nuts. I go often and always for company, or the holidays. Also, their weekly specials can really be a good deal, so look for those, or subscribe to their circular, and have it emailed directly to you....Go and take a peak, I think you'll love it!

PS....Did I mention their assortment of chocolate goodies? Yummy!

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

I usually drive by at 7pm ish and it's still crowded. I should check what time they open and go mid-week. I dislike crowds, at least ones not at concerts.

That is great! Of course that day it poured. Our local down-at-the-heels mall got fancied up a few years back. Now it's so busy it's unrecognizable! Glad to see that it's doing well, but I miss the old days when it was all full of weird little stores and 1970s orange-and-brown tilework.
