  • How much mileage have you gotten out of your PC or MAC?

5 1/2 years from my PC is probably my longest run.

I built it 5 1/2 years ago, added memory and more disk storage over the years. For about the last 6 months now maybe longer it would just crash while I was working on it. I would always get it to recover, but it has been getting symptomatically worse. I knew the day would arrive when I would not be able to use it functionally. Now it just boots and crashes all day long. I have to start it in safe mode now to keep it stable. And that is where is stands.

So I ordered a new DIY kit last Sunday evening from Newegg just in the middle of the Online Christmas Rush Shipment has been backlogged now from UPS. Not really upset at all, just taking it in stride.

What really bothers me more is that the lifespan of these tech gadgets and appliances have a define lifespan then they become unusable. Call it planned obsolescence or whatever. We are dependent on these tools in the modern age.

Apple has good products, but I just have not been sold on the product. Mainly due to the fact that you really can't open up under the hood and make your own tweaks and mods. They manufacture their products such that you really can't tinker with them.

As you can see from my post I like to take things apart and put them back together again.

    Anyway back to my question.

What is the longest you have been able to function on your PC/laptop/Mac before you had to go out and trade up for a new device?

My record for a PC is 5 1/2 years.

PS. I am posting from an old MAC DS left when he moved out. Not sure how old it is, but this device is cranky as well. I have maxed out the memory, and I can't perform any other upgrades to this MAC either. So this this MAC has also hit the technology wall. I will say this is maybe 6 years old at this point. Not sure. But it does not count since it really was not mine.

PCs 6 years, 6 years,2 years and counting and 9 years and counting. Laptops- 6 years and counting and 2 years and counting. The 9 year old pc doesn't get much use and hasn't been on line in over a year. I use it mainly to burn music CD's now. It has dual CD bays and a 1.44 mb floppy drive bay.

Usually only 4 years from my PC's.
I'm going on 3 years with my iMac.
Kindle is 3 years also and still works nicely.
I'm entertaining buying a Chromebook to replace the Lenovo laptop that's getting slowwwwww as molasses.

And I need a dishwasher too cause my condo didn't come with one.
I'm thinking of getting one of those Euro ones that go in the drawer.

I have an old Windows 7 PC which is 10, however, it only lasted 8 or 9 and developed a glitch which caused a random failure to start. I finally gave up and bought a new one this year. It is windows 8 (I hate Windows 8). The old one is still able to boot occasionally but I have removed almost all of the stuff I need. Just about time for the recycle bin.

Just got a new dishwasher when we rebuilt the kitchen last year. It sure runs quieter than the old one, but takes way longer to run.

Windows 7? I'm still running Windows XP over here.... I put myself on the list for replacement...but then I acted like a Mom and bought Christmas stuff for everyone else. Kids are all Apple'd up. I'm living in the dark ages. So it goes. I'll get mine next.

lol. I still have a dx486-120x4 from 1994. I also have an old 1997 Compaq Pentium with a 1 gig have drive. Then came a Compaq with a 10 gig and then a Compaq Persario laptop. All of these still boot up and work.

For work my cpu is a HP thats maybe 5 years old now. This cpu is rarely used online.

Next it was a Toshiba Satalite laptop which I use now and a HP that has the hdmi slots that we travel with which is my wifes old laptop. My wife now has an Ipad and will never go back.

My grandkids all have android tablets. Even the 3 year old is doing stuff on a tablet.

Wow Tony. I kept all of my junk because I paid for it and no one wanted them after a year or two. The old 486 actually was the most expensive cpu I have ever owned. I think I paid about $1400 for that clunker. It does have some good games loaded in dos like strip casino.

My 9 year old was a custom built machine that cost just under 1k and it replaced my original custom built which was obsolete after 6 years. I hardly use it as it is slow and has only a 120gb drive and 512 mb ram.

I have a PC that I built in 1997 that is still running fine. I use it as my Linux platform. I have a Dell Dimension desktop running XP Professional that is still running great after 10 years. I did add RAM to it a couple years ago. I also added a 19" flat screen monitor about 7-8 years ago and it still is good. I also have a 3 year old Dell Vostro 1510 with XP Professional that is working just fine. I aslo have a Dell Latitude E6410 with Windows 7 Professional that is running great. I use them all but the Dell Vostro Laptop gets used the most about 8 hours /day. I have a few other desk tops and laptops that I no longer use.
