I was given a quote of over $700 for a pair of glasses at my local place a few months ago so have been making do with drugstore readers.
Then a few weeks ago a friend of mine showed up with really nice-looking new glasses she had just gotten from Warby Parker. They have a bunch of stores in the city, but also do a killer online business - basically you can try 5 sets of frames delivered for free, return them at no cost. Order the ones you like.
I walked in to the UES store today and got a complete eye exam for $75. Then ordered a really nice pair of glasses, total for frames plus lenses =$95. That's the price for most glasses in the store, including most types of lenses, special coating, etc. 30 day guarantee, return for any reason. I also got a pair of progressives, those lenses are more so the total was $295. If I don't love them I will return them. I don't know how this compares to Costco, but I dont' have access to Costco and this was an entirely pleasant shopping experience.
Rx sunglasses run around $150 total, all are polarized. So Rx sunnies for the price of a pair of low-end RayBans.
The site has a cool "virtual tryon" feature you can use if you upload a photo of yourself to help narrow down the frames you want to try on at home. I am eagerly awaiting my new specs!
