  • Someone opened an ebay account using my email address

I just received a notification thanking me for opening an ebay account, which I hadn't open. I already have an ebay account with another email address.
I changed the password and called up ebay and they said it was opened by an ip from China. They have just closed it. Has this happened to anyone else?
I don't think they have access to my email but wonder why they would bother opening random eBay accounts.

Sydney, ebay had a HUGE data breach last month and ebay asked everyone to change their passwords at that time.
They have access to alot of info with that breach. Emails, passwords, credit card info and personal info.
It's a big breach. I've heard of a few people having their accounts compromised.
Maybe the crooks are now getting around to those who haven't yet changed their passwords.

Ebay also recommended that you change the passwords on your bank account, paypal and any credit cards you use with them.
      Get busy.

I had changed the password of my eBay immediately after the data breach. The ebay person said they won't have access to the password of my email account because they didn't try to use my name but just opened it with random numbers and letters as the name. Very strange. Because it was my email address, I was able to recover the password for the new eBay account and set a new one, then called to close it.
I am going to change all my passwords for everything on the internet just in case. Arghh, so many passwords!

It's a pain. I had someone hack one of my emails last month.

Im running out of passwords that I can remember. In fact, I don't remember any of the important passwords anymore. Used to be that password1 was an airtight password. My old favorite 1234567 password just doesn't cut it at most websites, even if I add 1 to the end.
