  • Fake Area Codes - Extremely Important To Know!!

    Subject: fake area codes

The link on the bottom is real....this is real.

    IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT AREA CODE
We actually received a call last week from the 809 area code. The woman said "Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you--get back to us quickly. I Have something important to tell you." Then she repeated a phone number beginning with 809 . "We didn't respond".

Then this week, we received the following e-mail:

    Subject: DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809 , 284 AND 876

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US BY AT&T. DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809

This one is being distributed all over the US . This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call.
Be sure you read this and pass it on.
They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family member who has been ill or to tell you someone has-been arrested, died, or to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc.
In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls.

If you call from the US , you will apparently be charged $2425 per-minute.

Or, you'll get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you'll often be charged more than $24, 100.00.

    WHY IT WORKS:

The 809 area code is located in the British Virgin Islands (The Bahamas).
The charges afterwards can become a real nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.

Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to help them become aware of this scam

    Thanks!

    Wow! Thanks for the warning.

I have unlimited domestic long distance and once called Canada unknowingly until the huge bill came. I don't want that to happen ever again.

It is so easy to assume it is a US code.
I think the international area codes should somehow be different than domestic codes, possibly four numbers. It is too easy to call another country and not know it.

Regarding 809 and other area codes

There is an interesting discussion of this scam at www.snopes.com
Just enter the search term 809 Area Code Fraud to call it up. And it does point out that there are legitimate phone numbers within area code 809.

Like an earlier poster I strongly feel that ALL foreign area codes should require a separate country code to access.

I may misread it, but I believe the info there did not argue that the area code phone number is not real, so there are scam artists create a company to call and ask you call back to a foreign company that will charge hugh amount to you.

The artical just argues that the email suggests the AT&T employee is behind these company is untrue and claim since these are foreign country company, they can do nothing to them (in other word, you have to pay AT&T).

Another telephone number scam? 866 area code

I just received a very suspicious call that I won a 3 day free cruise and should call 1 866-576-1212 with my confirmation number and no obligation. I can't seem to find information on where area code 866 is except that it may be toll free to canada? The name of the company is Ameriworld but when I googled it only found Ameriworld.com in Florida but that company seems to make security safes for cruise and motel industry.

I know this is a scam but will not even call the number to get further information just in case I get charged some exorbitant fee just for making the call. Anyone else get this or know anything about this obvious scam ( just don't know if it's the regular travel scam to give deposit for travel package and then stay in some dump) or if this is another telephone scam?????

Okay in checking toll free arae codes I found 866 listed and my wife said the caller ID said Arizona. So this is probably just a regular travel package scam. Still anyone ever heard of Ameriworld and this new scam?

OK, as an old AT&T gal. 809 is a valid area code for MOST of the caribbean. I would be very leery of calling an 809 without knowing whom I'm calling and what your calling plan covers and what your rates are to make that call.

As to 866 that is a toll free call ( as are 800, 888, 877 ) there is no way you can be charged for the call.
