3:53 am, getting ready to go pick up friends, they have pre approval but still feel three hours early is necessary at a small regional airport.

Have them check when things open up at the airport.

Dh and I had a 6 a.m. flight out of Vancouver. We had been advised by United to allow plenty of time, and we also knew would be going through Customs in Vancouver. We got there so early that the United counter wasn't open for check in. Once they finally opened and we got our luggage tags we discovered the baggage drop off wasn't open. We waited another 45 minutes. Then we go through Global Entry and have to wait for the Customs agents to get there and open up. Hurry up and wait, wait, wait.

You are a good friend. I would have told them to take a car service.

come to think of that, that is what they told us when we had to leave at 4:30 to catch a six o'clock flight!
they will take us in two weeks, but I don't plan to leae that early!

I just got tsa pre approval. I was planning to get to airport two hours early, but maybe I don't need to get there that early?

We both got the TSA precheck going down, but the precheck line wasn't open. We got there 1.5 hours early and sailed right through.

On the return from Orlando, I got the precheck but DH did not. I joined him on the regular line which was a ZOO. It took us about 45 minutes to get through it. I think it looks worse than it is because instead of feeding all in off one line, everyone just mills about and joins a line.

You are nicer than dh or I. If one gets precheck and the other doesn't we don't both go through the longer line. This is one reason we finally got Global Entry.

left our house at 5:40, by 6:20, we were had checked carry on bags, gone through security ( had my carry on searched carefully), and walked to our gate and had an hour to wait before boarding began.

Gosh, in PHX, we get to the airport about 1 hour 15 minutes before take-off for a USA flight and 2 hours for an International flight to Mexico. We never check bags (carry-on only) and the 11:30AM flights on Saturdays do not seem to have a line. I sure hope that does not change this November!

It really does depend on the airport I guess. SEA can be a long line through security, but 90 minutes has always gave us about 45 - 60 minutes to have breakfast once through security. 90 minutes is my norm but when using international airports we use 2 hours.

Sorta related . . . anyone use Flightaware?

                                https://flightaware.com/

When I have someone to pick up at an airport, say like a houseguest or a wife, I will watch the flight on Flightaware. I check to see when it takes off and I leave for the airport when the plane reaches the Leave-For-The-Airport line.

I try not to get there 2 hours before the plane.
