  • Cautionary tale concerning snorklers

Well unfortunately, I've got another tale. My Dad was snorkeling last week in Guam when he accidentally brushed up against some coral. He didn't think much of it until two days later. He had traveled to Oahu, Hawaii and upon waking up had a pretty good fever. Then he noticed his calf. It was all red and swollen where he had touched the coral and the infection was spreading up his leg.

He went to the ER and was given two strong antibiotics and sent home. The following day his condition hadn't improved so they admitted him. Now it looks like he will be in the hospital 2-3 days with a morphine drip and IV antibiotics.

He seems to be taking it in stride and could probably really use the rest but obviously their vacation is ruined. My Mom is dealing with the insurance company, the airlines and the Kona Marriott trying to get the now necessary extra days.

Just thought you all should know, although I'm sure that if you scuba or snorkel with any regularity you probably already know how dangerous coral can be.

This is something that I knew but it is a good idea to let others who may not know aboit. The Coral is live and if it scratchs you it lives inside of you and gets the area infected.

Thank you for posting this information....I have just recently started snorkeling, and had no idea of the danger involved in brushing up against coral.....

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

WOW! That is some reaction your dad had. Hope things get better soon.

We always buy a bottle of white vinegar when we will be snorkeling. Pour over the scratch immediately and do not rinse it with fresh water. I hear meat tenderizer also works but have never tried that.

              Invest in a dive skin

If you are going to snorkel with any regularity, a dive skin is a good idea. Not only will it protect from scratches and bites, it gives a little sun protection as well.

The ocean has all kinds of stuff in it. I'm glad that your Dad is going to be OK.

Well Dad is doing just fine now and is going to be released today. He'll be back home tomorrow. It's pretty amazing how many people have either had or heard of someone who had a similiar experience.

When I see the red stuff...fire coral...I swim in the other direction. It's not to be messed with...period. Hope your dad feels better soon!

Actually, fire coral isn't red. It's a mustardy yellow color.
