Our local newspaper is reporting that our county is the covid 19 hotspot of Washington. They report over twice the cases per population size. I don't think this covid dealio is going to end in our area anytime soon.

On the good news is food and gas prices have bottomed out. Toilet paper is every where. Our two chikens are getting fed pretty good table scaps and are laying an egg a day. I don't eat eggs and my wife uses them only for baking. I have gained 8 pounds. Getting really bored.

Whats happening with you all ?

I heard there is another buying frenzy going on over a possible disruption of the food supply and that the supermarket in town has a lot of bare shelving. We have 2 cases of covid in town, down from four and no deaths. The nearest small city where we do our shopping has around 200 cases. Seems to be less ugly people, with masks now being required in public.

I was talking with a police friend of mine and the facemask thing for him is a real bummer. We went to Winco a couple of days ago to fill up a small frezzer I use for fishing . All the shelves were full. Plenty of tp too.

My county has over 30,000 confirmed cases. There are also many people who have died in nursing homes without having had a diagnosis. Masks are required in public. People are dutifully complying with social distancing but it is getting old. The local restaurants are doing a robust take out business especially since they can sell cocktails to go. I’m looking forward to going back to work at school but I don’t see it happening before September.

I see where Switzerland is reopening its schools on May 11. There government looked to actual science instead of modelling and determined it was safe to do so. They determined that the viral load of children for the Wuhan coronavirus is so low that they usually do not even show symptoms and that it is too low to infect anyone else, adult or child. Hence the reopening.

That mask thing could be a problem in some states. North Carolina, for example, has a state criminal law on adults wearing masks in public. It was written to suppress the KKK.

I did read that in Europe they caught the most wanted ISIS terrorist known to be at large there. He was using a coronavirus mask at the time to try to hide his identity.

Yes but it does cover up some ugly people, as well as reducing the chances of the spread of the virus.

People are starting to go stir crazy from the lockdowns.

In the next county over from ours, a popular local restaurant that is owned by a local family has had a chicken buffet on Thursdays for years. Last Thursday they decided to defy the ban on restaurants opening for dining in and did their traditional chicken buffet. The news spread by word of mouth and the place was packed. People congratulated them on standing up to the governor. Then as the lunch rush was ending a bit after 2PM, a local policeman from the town of Oriental showed up and told the owners he would have to cite them for a misdemeanor unless they shut down immediately, which they did, the lunch rush being over. What has really circulated locally and galled people was the state trooper parked across the street from the restaurant monitoring the situation. I understand the term "gestapo" is being applied by local folks down there.

On a more positive note, a local chicken packing plant, House of Raeford, has set up outlets in our county and several nearby counties, selling 40 pound boxes of chicken, direct from the packing plant. This is a big plus because there has been a real run on meats at the supermarkets.

We have a couple of industrial scale hog "farms" in our county, and they are in a bind with packing plants closed. A friend of mine took advantage of that situation. He is a semi-retired farmer and used to raise hogs himself on a small scale. He still has his hog pens, so he got in touch with the owners of one of the big hog operations and acquired all the hogs he could fit in his pens for a pitiance. He and his wife have the skills to butcher hogs and now he has a very cheap pork supply. A lot of small farmers in that end of the county used to raise hogs on a small scale, and he has spread the word to his neighbors about this opportunity and gotten a lot of interest. Now his wife is trying to find one of the chicken operations in the county to our north which would be willing to dispose of a bunch of chickens the same way. They also have a presently unused chicken house on their farm.

My county's health department reported yesterday that we now have no active coronavirus cases in our county. All 19 have recovered and there have been no deaths here. The adjoining county to our east reports no cases at all.

Our county commission has gotten a lot of pressure from small businesses to reopen. Some are staring at looming bankruptcy if they have to stay closed. The county commission had two resolutions on its agenda Monday to reopen the county, one of which declared the governor's executive order illegal (which it is) and invalid and it looked like at least one of them would pass. On the seven member commission, the two member faction that produced the resolutions were expected to support them, and the commission chairman, a member of a three member faction, had voiced support for them on a local radio talk show. The local state representative attended the meeting and urged passage of the resolutions. However, pressure from the administration in Raleigh had been exerted on the chairman's faction and they flipped. Many small business owners are now furious with those commissioners who they feel betrayed them.

One recent report was that 30% of the restaurants in our part of the state would probably not survive due to the losses from the lockdown.

Our grocery stores seem to still be able to stock chicken and pork again but beef supplies are still thin. One of the chicken processing plants in the area is working at full tilt but another is on reduced capacity and the chicken producers who contract with them will probably have to cull their flocks. I hear the same on pork processors in our region, that capacity is down substantially but enough is operating to keep the supply sufficient for now. The local restaurants which are still open for carry out or drive through seem to have enough meat of all types for now. The legislature has passed funding to help poultry and livestock producers dispose of the carcasses of animals or birds they have to cull.

I see more people who are out are wearing masks. Our family has a decent supply of the N95 masks and I wear one when I go out, and also keep hand sanitizer in my pocket.

Increased positive covid tests from 4 to 5 in town and deaths from 1 to 2. The town south of us is just one of two in the state that has no covid cases. We have about 3300 people in town and that generally is pushed up by summer home occupancy.
Yesterday a long time friend called me and told me that one of our old tennis crew had died of the covid virus. That is the first person that I knew personally that had died due to this pandemic.
