Yes, both of my child qualified and took the SAT. It's a good honor for your child in today's competitive educational world. It also gives your child a chance to take the SAT and see where they are in 8th grade. The award is given when they are in 7th grade and they take the test in 8th grade.
It's embarrassing when your child scores higher on the SAT when they are in 8th grade than when you did in 12th grade!
If your child scores high enough in 8th grade they can get an award. Duke uses this program to ferret out the geniuses so they can recruit them.

My son participated in this program as a 7th grader. He scored high enough that he was recogonized by Duke during a TIPS recognition for those that score above 500 in either math or verbal part. It was a nice event and each student received a medallion and a certificate. A reception was hosted afterwards and each student also got a TIPS tshirt. You should be able to find some information on TIPS if you do a search or you call call the TIPS office at Duke. For those such as my son who score high, are invited to participate in summer programs - tution is charged ( $2,000 - $3000 ?) for 3 weeks. It is an honor to be asked to participate and I would encourge student to take the SAT that qualifies - at least they will know how they stand on a national ranking test and what they need to improve on to get the score that is needed to attend a college of choice. Just my honest opinion.
