  • Thanks, I bought a Tracfone for DH

Thanks to all..I bought a Tracfone for DH & DS to use while on their hunting trip. So now we have two technologically challenged MEN on the loose with a cell phone...neither has ever used one before.

I typed out all the phone #'s they will need, plus put them in the phone. And I made a simple list of things to do for them to use the phone i.e. punch in the numbers on the sheet of paper I made up for them, push the green button (this is after they turn on the phone) and they have their party on line. Also told them to turn the phone off when not in use, and how to look to see if the battery is low and how to charge it up. I can hardly wait until I either get a call from them (unlikely) or hear their stories when they return home next Saturday night.

I had a $25 gift card from CVS, so the phone cost $0. However I had to buy more time and for 60 units, I paid $19.99, which was added to the time that came with the phone, giving the guys 80 units. It took a while to activate the phone (why did they need ALL those numbers????). So now we have 2 cell phones, which we can pass around to various members of the family to use. Or for our daughters BF to use so he can sit in the cell phone lot at RSW waiting to pick her up on Thursday night. Maybe he will be convinced to get a cell phone then

If you buy a 60-minute card online, you can add a one-year activation card for $49 right now. (It's $99 without the additional purchase.) I think it comes with 250 minutes and you can get 200 more with the promo code 50809.

I use my phone a lot, so I get the $129-per-year double minutes plan and that comes with 400 minutes, plus 200 more with that promo code, plus it doubles the minutes you add for a year.

Good luck with the phone! Hope it works out well for you.

I'm glad you decided to try it. I now have a work cell phone and gave my DH my TracFone. He used it for the first time this past week and was so pleased that he didn't need to go to a public coin phone. In evey other way he's so technologically savvy. I don't know why using a cell phone was such a big step for him.

DH and I held out FOREVER. We were pretty much the last people we knew to get cell phones. Now I loooove it, because I always hated hunting for DH, missing people I was supposed to be meeting, forgetting my subway stop....

Actually, we held out forever b/c I still worked in NYC and NYC had phone booths on every corner, so I was like, "Why would you need a phone in this great city of ours, with phone booths on every corner?" Then, of course, when everybody got cell phones, most of the phone booths slowly disappeared! Now you can hardly find a working public phone in NYC.

That's just what my DH found out when he was in a conference center this past spring. There were banks and banks of cubes where pay phones had been and there were only 2 phones there. And only once did he have to wait to use a phone. He was amazed and incredulous. We still can't contact each other by phone because his phone is never on. Mine wasn't either, until my company gave me a cell phone so that I could be contacted wherever I am.
