  • My latest foster kitten

I guess every town needs one animal softie. Yesterday my best buddy <the one I ride with all the time, K> calls and says:

K: "Lawren my very best friend in the world...."
L: I hate to ask but with a greeting like that; What do you want?
K: Do you think you could take in a bottle baby? I have no room for it.
    L: <sigh>
K: It was found on the yellow line on Rte 59 right outside Avon and it needs a place to stay JUST until it will eat real food.
    L: How old is it?
K: 4 weeks so maybe you'll have him for a week or so....he is really cute.
L: Well you know cute isn't a factor K but I have so MUCH going on around here. I'm a bit short on sleep. Bottle babies can be so demanding.
    K: A week TOPS. PROMISE!
L: OK I'll take it. I'll get him from you at the barn.

Needless to say this itty-bitty isn't 4 weeks old but 3. Doesn't take a bottle well yet and completely FILTHY. More like 2 weeks and I do tend to get attached to them.

    <sigh>

Cute as a button though. With those BLUE EYES only the tiniest, youngest of kittens have. Even one of the ears hasn't gone completely upright yet.

He is beginning to get the idea on the bottle and today we got a bath in the kitchen sink. I'm trying to attach a pic of him but not having much luck. Wrapped in a dish towel after his bath and supper. So tiny.

Tony they all get names here. Even the "Brat Pack" got names! They were a trip.

But this one hasn't told me his yet.

That was very nice of you to take a kitten in your home.
You have a heart of gold.

Lawren, send the photo image to me, if you like and

I will post it for you. You have my email address.

Lawren, you are such a softy and a sweetheart too. I once found a little one like that at a restaurant and it was my plan to take him to the pound but we kept him. We had to feed him a special formula according to the Vet. You can buy it at the pet store.

Guess, how old this cat (Taffy) is today? He will be 17 on October 23 and we still love him. He is doing great but is the ruler of this household, I can tell you.

He came at the most fortunate time because we just had lost our first Siamese cat who was the second half of our other Siamese cat. These two were always together but Taffy never took Tiger's place. Each animal is so different in their behavior.

I feel for you because it is such a responsibility to keep them but it is so hard to give them up once you take them in your home. Our neighbor named him Taffy because my husband was born in Wales and he looked that color.

I bottle fed four baby kittens that the pound could not take care of, two of them died, both white kittens, and the other two are still here, five years later. I love my babies and have a special bond with them. They sleep with us and think they belong with us, whatever we do. They are not allowed outside, too many coyotes, foxes, raccoons and prarie dogs near our house, so they stay inside with us. They are like my children.

The vet was so nice when my two white kittens died. She told me that kittens are like candles, their little flames are very easy to put out. We thought the other two would die, both tabbies, but they survived, and whatever illness the white ones had, they just didn't get it. SAD to lose those white kitties. All were two weeks when they came to our home.

Cindy, do you have pictures of your little furry friends? I know how you feel. They are our babies. On our news, the other day, we heard that coyotes are killing our pets too in the neighborhood. We lost two cats in our street and one escaped with a very large wound. I am glad our cat is inside too. We are getting too many coyotes around here too and other wild animals. We have seen foxes and raccoons running around and many opossums too.

Our problem is injured birds ending up in our back yard and we have rescued two of them. Only one made it of the two. It was a sparrow hawk. The white egret didn't make it. We also had a seagull and he smelled so bad but I took him to our Vet too. He didn't make it either. Our Vet takes care of exotic birds and police dogs too and takes care of wild birds free of charge.

It is called being a SUCKER. Actually this little one hasn't woken me up at night and is not a "morning" kitten. He is difficult to wake in the morning and sluggish. Yesterday I was in a panic! But when I came home he was as perky as you please...he is sound asleep in his cage while I'm typing. He will have to be woken before we leave for DS football game. He would never make it to 2PM with no food.

Yes I make up kitty formula and save in the fridge. Then heat water in microwave and warm it. Just like a human baby.

Your Taffy and my Taz are a year apart. I adopted TAZ 18 years ago on election day. He too was only about 4 weeks old so his birthday is around now as well.

I sent you a couple of pictures of the "interloper". Taz has no love at all for the foster kittens. Which is why they don't get to stay...

Lawren's little kitten of 4 weeks old.

What a tiny little kitten and your kitty has the nicest bluest eyes I have ever seen on a little tabby. I hope he will grow up healthy.

Here is another photo of the tiny kitten. You take good care of him, Lawren. How long will you keep this kitty?

                            We almost lost him.

He was so very sluggish this morning. I called K in a panic. and OFF to the vet he went. The vet's reaction was "Why are you bothering. He isn't going to make it."

We gave him fluids. But his temperature was only 91. A cats normal temp is 101. Close call but he perked up and he is back home with me again and swaddled in blankets and hot water bottles and a heating pad.

Strange as my room are 69 degrees but I guess he is still too young to be alone and be warm enough. I will have to keep reheating the water bottles for him during the nights I guess.

I will have to research some angel names for him as he was definately visiting them...

Lawren, I really feel for you because the kitten may not make it. Don't get too attached. This happened to my neighbor's litter of their cat because they didn't bother to spay it. People are still so dumb today and then leave their animals outside. The little ones died one after one. I hate to say this but be prepared. It is so hard to lose a pet as even, after a few days or weeks only, you get attached to them.

I hope I am wrong because your other cat is a good example of success. I know that you are giving this kitten all the love and care it needs so he is very lucky and he is beautiful too with his blue eyes.

What gets me is that someone dumped this helpless kitten while they could have taken it to the pound which is more humane, I hope. We used to pick up stray cats too but can no longer do this but if I find one again, I will bring him to the no-kill shelter very close to me. At least, it has a chance to live.
