This is how I was with Starbucks before my son started there. I didn't like the coffee they served but brewing in myself was great. I drink a lot of coffee and love Sumatra. I use 2 tablespoons or measuring spoons for 4-5 cups instead of 2 for 6 ounces.
I have found my family and friends enjoy it more this way also.

I agree very much. The Sumatra is excellent, though I have a slight preference for Sulawesi and Gold Coast Blend.

For small batches I brew twice as strong as that - about one tbsp (freshly ground) per cup, up to four cups. Beyond four cups, I start cutting back on the amount of coffee, using about 8 tbsp for 10 to 12 cup brews.

People who are occasional coffee drinkers or who drink insipid coffees normally dilute my coffee by half. (That doesn't bother me one bit.) People who like strong coffee almost invariably enjoy my brew, even if it is stronger than what they are accustomed to.

The big thing I notice when brewing high quality very strong coffee is that not only is the taste intense and strong (without being overwhelmingly bitter), but it's also sates the coffee urge. I drink one large mug (about 24-oz size) in the morning, and I have virtually no desire for coffee the rest of the day. If I make it weaker, I keep drinking coffee all day long.

I also use 1 tablespoon per cup (6-7oz. cup). I can't believe that Starbucks recommends 2 tablespoons per 6oz. cup. The coffee I've had in their stores is TOO strong.

Bring a few ounces of Sulawesi on your next trip to Boise, Steve. I'll give a few ounces of a locally roasted coffee, White Cloud Mtn.

Phil - I'm familiar with White Cloud. I've tried most of their roasts and blends. On my sojourns to SE Idaho, that is often the only decent stuff available in Albertson's or Wal-Mart. It'll do when I can't get my usual Starbucks.

We use Green Mountain Roasters beans at home, grind the beans fresh each day but when we travel I usually grind enough beans for the trip and take it with us as many TS don't have a coffee grinder and it's one less thing for me to carry with us.

I often do that as well, except in Hawai`i (where I usually get some Kona at places such as Long's Drug store, where the Kona is less expensive than the places that cater to tourists.) Or I visit a Starbucks before the trip and pick up a 1/2 lb of my favorite.

I've found it necessary to put the fresh ground inside two zip-locks to effectively seal it, though.

We take one to two pounds of coffee on our vacations; we just leave what we don’t use for the people who clean the room.

At home, I usually drink Kona from a small producer on the Big Island - Dragon's Lair Estate.
