For small batches I brew twice as strong as that - about one tbsp (freshly ground) per cup, up to four cups. Beyond four cups, I start cutting back on the amount of coffee, using about 8 tbsp for 10 to 12 cup brews.

People who are occasional coffee drinkers or who drink insipid coffees normally dilute my coffee by half. (That doesn't bother me one bit.) People who like strong coffee almost invariably enjoy my brew, even if it is stronger than what they are accustomed to.
The big thing I notice when brewing high quality very strong coffee is that not only is the taste intense and strong (without being overwhelmingly bitter), but it's also sates the coffee urge. I drink one large mug (about 24-oz size) in the morning, and I have virtually no desire for coffee the rest of the day. If I make it weaker, I keep drinking coffee all day long.
