Cheap Spices

Today I went to get Paprika at the supermarket. The small bottle was $4.39.
Then I happened to see a shelf of spices in the Spanish food section. The same size bottle was $1.99. It was a different brand, but clearly said "Paprika" on the label with the Spanish translation beneath it. There were many different spices there, all at least half the price of the McCormick's brand on the shelf in the regular spice section.

When I worked at 32 Ave of the Americas there was a GREAT, HUGE spice shop on West Broadway that I would pass as I walked down to the WTC to commute home. That is all they sold. at terrific prices and you could buy as little or as large amount as you would need. I miss that place. As far as I know they never did reopen.

Now hopefully someone can come up with somewhere cheap for cleaning products. That's another wowser on the supermarket tab.

Lawren: Kalustyan's on Lexington and about 28th St. Fantastic spices! And they serve great food, too. I used to work near there and when I was pregnant (almost 10 years ago) I would waddle over and get their lentils for lunch EVERY DAY. Friends I used to work with still say, "I passed Kalustyan's the other day and I thought of you."

I spent a lot of time in Chelsea <23 & 7th> but not much time east of the flower market area.

Funny what we crave when preggers. My DS was a late August baby and I ate Ceaser salad at LEAST 5 times a week. Funny it is one of his faves now.

Does your "baby" like lentil soup???

I think I could do a spice run someday if you want to meet me.

Oh, Caesar salad was my FIRST kid! And, weirdly, Jones Park breakfast sausages, a food I had never even bought before in my whole life. DH and I were at the A&P at one o'clock in the morning and we couldn't figure out where they were. With meat? With eggs? With bacon? It took ages for us to find them in the freezer section.

That kid doesn't like Caesar salad OR Jones Park, but the second one, whose pregnancy was really more about Egg McMuffins (!!!), likes the sausages and the lentils that were from the third one's pregnancy....

Okay, I'll look up the Kalustyan's hours and everything and maybe we could go over Xmas week if you're around. Mmm, Kalustyan's! I hear you can even sit down there now. Used to be strictly takeout.

I was in this situation two wks ago. The supermarket Mccormick's and Masterfoods brand of Paprika was also really expensive. I was looking for sweet paprika to try out the Hungarian Beef Goulash recipe on DAE recently. Was also looking for whole black pepper. Well, I refused to buy them at the prices at the supermarket so the next time I was in a Chinese groceries store, I happened to pass the spice section and was pleasantly surprised to find larger packets for less than half the price. So I stocked up on everything that was running low at home.

Don't know what US Chinese shops are like but it might be another option for you to check out.
