  • My mysterious alarm problem

For the last 2 nights our home alarm has been beeping like crazy at around 4AM.

It isn't sounding into the neighborhood, thank goodness, as we don't set it at night. I am a night walker so we can't do that.

Anyway, it's 5AM eastern the night before last and I here 2 beeps. The same beeps I hear when I open a door! Of course, light sleeper that I am, I wake immediately and think THERE IS SOMEONE IN MY HOUSE!

DH would sleep through a nuclear bomb. So I go downstairs, check all windows and doors, look under tables and behind couches. No one. THIS IS GOOD.

Go back to bed and the darn thing beeps off and on for about 45 minutes. Get up in the morning <like I ever really went back to sleep > and zone 5 is lit on the controll panel.

Zone FIVE? I've lived in this house for 12 YEARS. I don't have a zone 5. I think...maybe. So of course I can't set the alarm when I go out for the morning as a circuit is open, but when I get home I start opening different things to find this mysterious zone 5.
    Doors check.
    Motion detector check.
    Mid level windows check.
    Family room windows check
    Laundry room windows check.....

NONE of them show up on zone 5. So where is zone 5???

Unresolved we go to sleep last night.... 4:15AM and the system starts beeping again. < You would think if there was a short it would go off sometime OTHER than the crack of dawn > Again I try to figure what/where this is coming from. Off and on beeping for yet another hour. DH snoring away and me wide awake.

So DH and I are talking this afternoon and he says "Do you know the basement windows are alarmed?" "No I say. are they really?"

DUH! Obviously not ever opening that ONE window it can only mean that THAT one contact is zone 5.... and I go clean the contacts but the zone 5 light never does go off.

But I did call the alarm company and ask how to bypass one zone. Bad me blamed it on the kitten.

Currently we are still running our sump pump at least twice a day and can't have the alarm company in. So I call and ask how exactly I can "bypass" a zone. Easy enough and now it is done and I may sleep past 4 tomorrow morning.

and I'm not sure if I want this company in. We have been customers for 12 years and the monthly charge is not cheap. About a $1/day. We had them in when we replaced windows last year to change out the contacts and they charged us $200 to do ONE window and the workman left a MESS.

So I'm shopping security companies. I know a lot of them will install their systems for free but I need to get a grasp on monthly/annual costs. Once I get those I will call and "threaten" our current company....

Anyone have national companies that they reccomend?

Do you have an outside alarm? Could be a tamper switch or wire that a squirrel is chewing on. Also could be a low battery backup.

      Lawren,

Hmmmm, why is it only happening in the middle of the night? Strange.

If you go around and open each window, door, etc., maybe you will find zone 5. Good Luck!!!

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Also open up the Alarm box that the company put most likely in a closet or garage or basement. Look at the panel they should have writen what zone 5 is there.
