  • Getting a new baby

Many of you may remember when we lost our beloved terrier Princess in December 2005. I never thought I'd want another dog because we just loved her so much and the loss was so intense. Also, DH stated he would positively be disappointed in any other dog I may bring home.
Slowly, time healed our wounds and I began talking about getting a new puppy. The kids (grown ups really - 24, 22 and 18) were on board, and DH had a little gleam in his eye.
As it turns out, one of the security guards in our school fosters for a rescue organization. His wife, really, is the one who does all the work. She promised me she'd be on the lookout for a small breed dog for me.
Today Pete told me they were getting a Havanese. I had never heard of the breed; it turns out they are pretty rare. He was in a pet store but did not sell (perhaps because the pricetag was $2000 - more than I paid for my best trading timeshare ). He is 7 months old and has spent his whole life in a cage. Probably has never seen the sunshine. I googled Havanese dogs and they are adorable!!!
I didn't know this, but apparently when dogs do not sell in a pet store, they are often returned to the breeders where they are destroyed. Rescue organizations get called to take them from the stores to save them from death row.
This little guy will be brought to Pete's house on Monday. He will stay at his house for approx. 3 weeks to be evaluated for socialization and to be neutered. Pete has 2 dogs and a child and they want the dogs to be exposed to these. After that, I can have him, all for the cost of the neutering!
I have been feeling a little depressed lately over health issues, and boy I am so excited. I don't even care when I remember how much work a puppy is.

Anyone care to offer up a name for this little guy? He is 10 lbs. and probably won't grow any more.

Fidel (get it? They're from Havana)

Congratulations on your new little guy! I'll keep thinking about names. Our dog came pre-named Coco, after Coco Chanel. She had a companion Chihuahua who was given to someone else--his name was Dior, which I thought was pretty cute.

      Jacki,

I won't help you name him, because once you meet him he will help you with a name, especially if you don't have a name you have been desperately wanting to give a puppy.

But I will tell you that a friend here has a Havanese, and loves it to death. I haven't met it yet, but they seem to be a new 'designer' breed that is gaining popularity, thus the pricetag...

Sounds like the two of you are very lucky to be getting eachother

Happy for you - I know the feeling about saying you will not get other pets.. having been there with cats twice over now. My new babies are more wonderful than I ever thought they could be.
The new baby will grow right under your heart and will help you name it.

I help groom several Havanese. I had never heard of them prior to working with Sue. They are for the most part very sweet, happy dogs and I like them.

I am happy for you Jacki and glad that you have room in your heart and your home for this little guy. He will reward you over and over again for your kindness.

He will name himself. Give him time.

You gotta wait till you meet him!

I agree - you can't name him until you meet him. It's so important that the name fit his personality, and you'll know once you get him. When we brought our two baby cat children home, the only thing I knew was that I wanted their names to start with the same letter. Personality-wise, it was appropriate to call them Trouble and Goodness, but as one of my employees pointed out to me, Trouble was not a good name to give to a pet because it would "negatively affect her psyche". Crazy pet person that I am, I was of course fully in agreement with this logic. My employee suggested a more positive name like "Spirit". So then we needed another name that started with "S". My staff all got into the game, and asked me about the temperament of the other girl. I said "calm". They ran "calm" through the thesaurus on Word, and came up with "serene". Eventually we named our two girls Spirit and Serena - fits them perfectly. See how well it all turns out!

Jacki....That's such good news!!! I'm very happy for you, and for the dog, too. I know that you will give him a wonderful home.

OK, we'll have to start thinking of names. It's true tho, it's difficult to name an animal, without seeing them.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Thank you all. One of the funniest dog names I ever heard was when DS and I were walking along, and a very tiny little dog trotted by with his owner. I overheard her say to him "Killer! Come here!" I laughed til tears ran down my face.

Killer was on our list for our miniature poodle, but I just couldn't do it to her.

Jacki, I am thrilled for you and for the little dog too. He will win your heart in seconds and a name will pop up out of the blue like it did with Lawren's Cougar (foster kitten). It's a big responsibility for many years but you already know that.

                    Keep us informed.

What a happy thing to read. Our current dog was rescued, he was 2.5 when we got him from foster care and he "came" named. We thought it wouldn't be possible to love a dog more than our last one, who we finally put down because of numerous cancer things, but Moe is truly our third child, and the most spoiled!!

Please post some pictures when you get him.

Every day on our way to school, youngest DD and I pass three tiny white dogs in a fenced-in yard, YAPPING LIKE MAD. They get so angry that you're passing their yard that they jump up and down in fury. Three years ago, when the first one appeared, I said to DD (who was about four years old), "If that was your dog, what would you call it?"

And she said, very calmly, "Killer."

                        (I was so proud!)

So ever since then, those dogs have been Killer and the Killerettes to us.

Glad you got another dog. We named ours Tuffy cause he really thought he is tuff. We should call him Puffy instead.

Too Cute! Good Luck with your new Family Member

Welcome to the Havanese Club of America

NOTE: At this time the price of a Havanese is about $1800.00 to $2500.00. The interest in obtaining a Havanese from a breeder that does all the health testing exceeds the availability of them. It is possible that a person may have a wait of six months to 2 years to obtain the “right” one for them. You may be unable to find Havanese Breeders in your location, as Breeders are not in all states. You more than likely may have to travel to pick up your Havanese.

Congratulations on your pending family member! Each dog has its own personality, but we've loved each and every one who has passed through our lives.

The funniest name for a dog that I've met was Turbo for a Basset Hound. He was so slow and plodding.
