Many of you may remember when we lost our beloved terrier Princess in December 2005. I never thought I'd want another dog because we just loved her so much and the loss was so intense. Also, DH stated he would positively be disappointed in any other dog I may bring home.
Slowly, time healed our wounds and I began talking about getting a new puppy. The kids (grown ups really - 24, 22 and 18) were on board, and DH had a little gleam in his eye.
As it turns out, one of the security guards in our school fosters for a rescue organization. His wife, really, is the one who does all the work. She promised me she'd be on the lookout for a small breed dog for me.
Today Pete told me they were getting a Havanese. I had never heard of the breed; it turns out they are pretty rare. He was in a pet store but did not sell (perhaps because the pricetag was $2000 - more than I paid for my best trading timeshare ). He is 7 months old and has spent his whole life in a cage. Probably has never seen the sunshine. I googled Havanese dogs and they are adorable!!!
I didn't know this, but apparently when dogs do not sell in a pet store, they are often returned to the breeders where they are destroyed. Rescue organizations get called to take them from the stores to save them from death row.
This little guy will be brought to Pete's house on Monday. He will stay at his house for approx. 3 weeks to be evaluated for socialization and to be neutered. Pete has 2 dogs and a child and they want the dogs to be exposed to these. After that, I can have him, all for the cost of the neutering!
I have been feeling a little depressed lately over health issues, and boy I am so excited. I don't even care when I remember how much work a puppy is.
Anyone care to offer up a name for this little guy? He is 10 lbs. and probably won't grow any more.
