A question about birds in NY

The other day when we were riding we spotted a bird that we had never seen before.

This bird was probably a bit bigger than a sparrow and from what I could make out was a solid irredescent blue. Almost like a male peacocks breast but not quite as royal blue in color.

It was not a jay or a bluebird.

Any idea what it could have been?

They're usually green, not peacock blue--but monk parakeets live all around here now.

They live in big condo-like nests with thick walls that help them overwinter. They make a raucous squawking noise. They might look bluish in certain light...although not iridescent peacock blue....hmm.....

Indigo Bunting?

Any idea what it could have been?

It could be an Indigo Bunting.

Walt would buntings normally be found here in lower NY State? That is a distinct possibility. I will have to keep a close eye out for it again.

I thought he looked more like this guy's blue....this IS a bluebird but not "our" bluebird which has a red chest marking.



But now that I have seen your Bunting. That is a distinct possibility.

It should be seen in the Eastern USA.

Another Blue bird is the Blue Grosbeak!

This bird is larger than the Bunting.

Lazuli Bunting

This is also a blue bird. But it is a Western Bird.

Cool.
I have sent it to my friend K to see if she things they are one and the same. We see all sorts of creatures when we ride but this was a new one for us.

no that has markings. The one we saw was just very blue...he settled in a low tree but flew off when we went to get a closer view.

Unfortunately binoculars would tend to clock me in the head while riding so I don't carry them.
