    (Tony Banks) GENESIS - "Undertow"

    The curtains are drawn
Now the fire warms the room.
    Meanwhile outside
Wind from the north-east chills the air.
It will soon be snowing out there.

    And some there are
Cold, they prepare for a sleepless night.
Maybe this will be their last fight.

But we're safe in each other's embrace.
All fears go as I look on your face.

    Better think awhile
Or I may never think again.
If this were the last day of your life, my friend
Tell me, what do you think you would do then?

Stand up to the blow that fate has struck upon you
Make the most of all you still have coming to you.
Lay down on the ground and let the tears run from you
Crying to the grass and trees and heaven finally on your knees

Let me live again, let life come find me wanting.
Spring must strike again against the shield of winter.
Let me feel once more the arms of love surround me
Telling me the danger's past. I need not fear the icy blast again

Laughter and music and perfume linger here
    and there, and there.
Wine flows from flask to glass and mouth,
As it sooths confusing our doubts.

    And soon we feel,
Why do a single thing today.
There's tomorrow sure as I'm here.

So the days they turn into years
    And still no tomorrow appears.

    Better think awhile, etc.
"If a Nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.... If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to be informed."
-- Thomas Jefferson to Col. Yancey, 1816

      Little Jimmy Brown
This song always made me feel so sad:

There's a village hidden deep in the valley,
Among the pine trees half forlorn.
And there on a sunny morning,
      Little Jimmy Brown was born.
All the chapel bells were ringing,
      In the little valley town.
And the song that they were singing,
      Was for baby Jimmy Brown.
      Then the little congregation,
      Prayed for guidance from above.
      "Lead us not into temptation,
      Bless this hour of meditation,
      Guide him with eternal love."
There's a village hidden deep in the valley,
      Beneath the mountains high above.
      And there, twenty years thereafter,
Jimmy was to meet his love.
All the chapel bells were ringing,
'Twas a great day in his life.
'Cause the songs that they were singing,
Was for Jimmy and his wife.
      Then the little congregation,
      Prayed for guidance from above.
      "Lead us not into temptation,
      Bless, Oh Lord this celebration,
May their lives be filled with love."
From the village hidden deep in the valley,
One rainy morning dark and gray.
A soul winged its way to heaven,
      Jimmy Brown had passed away.
Just a lonely bell was ringing,
      In the little valley town.
'Twas farewell that it was singing,
      To our Little Jimmy Brown.
      And the little congregation,
      Prayed for guidance from above.
      "Lead us not into temptation,
May his soul find the salvation,
      Of Thy Great Eternal love."

Oh, I just hate that Christmas Shoes song! That is the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread title. A little boy needs to borrow money in order to buy some nice shoes for his mother to die in later that evening. C'mon. I hear that song and I'm depressed for at least an hour. I just turn the station when that one comes on. Luckily it's only on during the season....

          Johnny Cash

The Johnny Cash cover of Hurt by Nine Inch Nails.
          Hurt lyrics

          I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
          I focus on the pain
          The only thing that's real
          The needle tears a hole
          The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
          But I remember everything

          [Chorus:]
          What have I become
          My sweetest friend
          Everyone I know goes away
          In the end
And you could have it all
          My empire of dirt
          I will let you down
          I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
          Upon my liar's chair
          Full of broken thoughts
          I cannot repair
          Beneath the stains of time
          The feelings disappear
          You are someone else
          I am still right here

          [Chorus:]
          What have I become
          My sweetest friend
          Everyone I know goes away
          In the end
And you could have it all
          My empire of dirt
          I will let you down
          I will make you hurt

          If I could start again
          A million miles away
          I would keep myself
          I would find a way

            Angela

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Let's see now, which is the most depressing song ever done by the Smiths? Lawren, what do you think?

For those who don't know, the Smiths are one of the greatest bands to come out of the UK in the 80's New Wave era of pop music. Wonderful melodies, unusual and melodramatic lyrics, and Johnny Marr's incredible guitar style, combined with Morrissey's plaintive voice and cool James Dean-like looks, was and is still a joy to behold. Don't believe me? Watch this video!

YouTube - The Smiths - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now - Video

But I digress, let's try this Smith's lyric on for size:

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

              In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die ?

Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

              In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die ?

What she asked of me at the end of the day
              Caligula would have blushed

"You've been in the house too long" she said
              And I (naturally) fled

              In my life
              Why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye ?

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now

"You've been in the house too long" she said
              And I (naturally) fled

              In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die ?

                    How 'bout...

..going back to the 40s with

                    "Wreck on the Highway"

"I heard the wreck on the highway,
and I knew that someone's life was at end...
I went to the scene of destruction,
and a picture was stamped on my heart.

There was blood and glass all 'round,
and the smell of whiskey in the air,
I heard the wreck on the highway...
but I didn't hear anyone pray.

I didn't hear anyone pray, dear lord,I didn't hear anyone pray.
I heard the wreck on the highway,
but I did't hear anyone pray.

The song goes on with several other verses, but paraphrasing those few above has stretched my dim memory pretty thin as it is.

Hmm, let's see. What song would that be? Oh, I know. Like EVERY SINGLE SONG the Doors ever did. They're the most overrated band in rock history.

I have to disagree with the overated band comment. While I didn't care for a lot of their music the musicianship that band had was fenominal. Having played in bands for years I am still amazed at some of the things that band played for the years when they were popular.

Now if you were to say Jim Morrison was an over rated singer, we might be able to agree on that one. His style and talent was something I never really learned to appreciate. However, he made the grade and I didn't so who am I to judge.

Bread did some sad ones too. The one with the repeating refrain, "I found her diary underneath the tree, and started reading about me......"

You can tell I am in my fifties!

You used to play in bands? Rick is in a band now that he just joined a year ago. He always sang at church and loved it, plus he sang in barbershop quartet and chorus. I think it is his mid-life crisis. The guys at his firehouse were getting bored with ping pong so they decided to bring guitars and start jamming! Rick is the oldest at 52, he is the lead singer, but the other guys are all in their forties. They have been playing in various dives around the city, several times a month. People like that they are firefighters. The drummer is a mortician! So four firemen and a mortician in a rock band. It is hilarious. They call the band 9's a Pair because that is what the vocal alarm announces when both the pumper and the truck are called for rescue or fire. They are starting to make money.

The best song Rick sings is his own brother Ronnie's Rock Candy from the original Montrose album. That is a pretty great song. I don't think Ronnie did any sad songs, although he is such a sad person...........

"The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot

It is about a ship that left our port in November, 1975, with 26,000 tons of iron ore. It got caught in a storm and sank in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975. The song was a tribute to the 29 men who sank with the ship.

If anyone would like to hear it go to: Wreck Of The Edmond Fitzgerald
