  • The most depressing songs of all time

You know them, they come on the radio and you are transfixed by how horribly depressing these songs are. Lock up the razor blades and don't listen to them in a PLOM mood.

Which is your most depressing song?

For depressing, Leonard Cohen is front and center. (Maybe all of those Canadian winters, eh?). And he was probably at his depressingest with "Seems So Long Ago, Nancy":
      It seems so long ago,
      Nancy was alone,
looking at the Late Late show
      through a semi-precious stone.
      In the House of Honesty
      her father was on trial,
      in the House of Mystery
there was no one at all,
there was no one at all.

      It seems so long ago,
      none of us were strong;
      Nancy wore green stockings
      and she slept with everyone.
She never said she'd wait for us
      although she was alone,
I think she fell in love for us
      in nineteen sixty one,
      in nineteen sixty one.

      It seems so long ago,
      Nancy was alone,
a forty five beside her head,
      an open telephone.
We told her she was beautiful,
we told her she was free
but none of us would meet her in
      the House of Mystery,
      the House of Mystery.

And now you look around you,
      see her everywhere,
      many use her body,
      many comb her hair.
In the hollow of the night
when you are cold and numb
you hear her talking freely then,
      she's happy that you've come,
      she's happy that you've come.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

      “You shouldn't wear that body.”

Tony you are deeper than I suspected. Tell Laura I Love Her is a reach for many but stays in my top 20 "Music to Commit Suicide By".

I won't reveal my 'I Hate Myself and Want to Die' songs until tomorrow sometime.

Last Kiss (remembering the words, so not accurate)

We were out on a date in my Daddy's Car
          We hadn't gotten very far
Out in the road, straight ahead,
the car was stalled the engine was dead.

I couldn't stop so I swerved to the right,
I will never forget the sounds that night
The screeching tires and the bustin' glass
The painful scream that I heard last

Where oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me.
She's gone to heaven so I gotta be good,
so I can see my baby when I leave this world.

What about the whiny Bobby Vinton song, "Lonely"

Roy Orbison was always such a merry fellow.

How about a guy on a Ferris Wheel who looks down and sees his girlfriend and the operator laughing together at him as they shut down the Ferris wheel for the night and walk away, leaving him stranded all night at the top of the ride.

              THE COMEDIANS

I sat there alone upon the ferris wheel
A pastel colored carriage in the air
I thought you'd leave me danglin' for a little while
A silly twist upon a childish dare.
Below I saw you whispering to another man
Who held the lever that could bring me down
He'd stop the world fromturning at your command
It's always something cruel that laughter drowns
And I'm up while the dawn is breaking
Even though my heart is aching
I should be drinking a toast
              To absent friends
              Instead of these
              Comedians

I can hardly hear the music from the carousel
The wind picks up, the carriage starts to sway
As one by one the lights go out
              It's closing time
I see you take his hand and walk away
              Walk away

They say that you will always be the last to know
They say that all that glitters is not gold
It's not just that you're never coming back to me
It's the bitter way that I was told
And I'm up while the dawn is breakin'
Even though my heart is achin'
I should be drinkin' a toast
              to absent friends
              Instead of these
              Comedians.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

Cat's in the Cradle. Depressing in and of itself, because it's about how we never appreciate time spent with our children and our parents until it's too late, and then extra-depressing because it makes you start thinking about how Harry Chapin died.

I don't find Tell Laura I Love Her depressing at all! It's so silly! And how about Honey, the Bobby Goldsboro song? Same thing, meant to be depressing but it just makes me giggle.

Roy Orbison's life was full of tragedy. He was one hell of a singer tho.

I can tell a hard sell when I read one....I reveal ONE of my OMG Kill me now songs <just for you Wackster>. Not in my top 10 though

                      Lee Dickie - Patches :

Down by the river that flows by the coal yards.
Stands wooden houses with shutters torn down
There lives a girl everybody calls Patches
Patches my darling of Old Shanty town

We plan to marry when June brought the summer
I couldn't wait to make Patches my bride
Now I don't see how that ever can happen
My folks say No, and my heart breaks inside

Patches oh what can I do
I swear I'll always love you
But a girl from that place would just bring me disgrace
So my folks won't let me love you

Each night I cry as I think of that shanty
And pretty Patches there watching the door
She dosn't know that I can't come to see her
Patches must think that I love her no more

I hear a neighbor tellin my father
He said a girl name of Patches was found
Floating face down in that dirty old river
That flows by the coal yards in Old Shanty Town

Patches oh what can I do
I swear I'll always love you
It may not be right But I'll join you tonight
                      Patches I'm coming to you

I remember this song! I always thought it was so sad.

To continue with the lyrics (this is from memory too)
When I woke up, the rain was pouring down
There were people standing all around
Something warm was running in my eyes
But I found my baby somehow that night
I raised her head, and she smiled and said
"Hold me darling for a little while"
I held her close, I kissed her - our last last kiss
I found the love that I knew I would miss
                          And now she's gone
Even though I hold her tight
I lost my love, my life that night

                            How about "Run Joey Run"?

                            Lyrics below... Enjoy

                            Pete

                            Run Joey Run
                            David Geddes

Daddy please don't, it wasn't his fault, he means so much to me
Daddy please don't, we're gonna get married...just you wait and see.

She called me up, late last night, she said Joe, don't come over
My dad and I just had a fight, and he stormed out the door
I've never seen him act his this way, my God, he's going crazy
He says he's gonna make you pay, for what we've done, he's got a gun, so

                            Run Joey Run Joey Run
Daddy please don't, it wasn't his fault, he means so much to me
Daddy please don't, we're gonna get married...just you wait and see.

I got in my car and I drove like mad, till I reached Julie's place
She ran to me, with tears in her eyes, and bruises on her face
All at once, I saw him there, sneaking up behind me, WATCH OUT!
Then Julie yelled, he's got a gun, and she stepped in front of me
Suddenly, a shot rang out, and I saw Julie falling
I ran to her, I held her close, when I looked down, my hands were red,
and heres the last words Julie said...

Daddy please don't, it wasn't his fault, he means so much to me
                            Daddy please don't, we're gonna get married.....aaahhh..ahhhh
                            ahhhh....ahhhhh

Run Joey run Joey run Joey run Joey run Joey run...

                              Ew.

So this is a whole genre...the morbid dead-teen-lover-how-I-miss-him-her-it school. I notice no one has mentioned "Leader of the Pack," which fits right in, but which TRANSCENDS the genre utterly, because it is a GREAT song. Vroom, vroom!

Is she really going out with him?
Well, there she is. Let's ask her.
Betty, is that Jimmy's ring you're wearing?
                              Mm-hmm
Gee, it must be great riding with him
Is he picking you up after school today?
                              Uh-uh
By the way, where'd you meet him?

I met him at the candy store
He turned around and smiled at me
You get the picture? (yes, we see)
That's when I fell for (the leader of the pack)

My folks were always putting him down (down, down)
They said he came from the wrong side of town
(whatcha mean when ya say that he came from the wrong side of town?)
They told me he was bad
But I knew he was sad
That's why I fell for (the leader of the pack)

One day my dad said, "Find someone new"
I had to tell my Jimmy we're through
(whatcha mean when ya say that ya better go find somebody new?)
He stood there and asked me why
But all I could do was cry
I'm sorry I hurt you (the leader of the pack)

                              [Spoken:]
He sort of smiled and kissed me goodbye
The tears were beginning to show
As he drove away on that rainy night
I begged him to go slow
But whether he heard, I'll never know

Look out! Look out! Look out! Look out!

I felt so helpless, what could I do?
Remembering all the things we'd been through
In school they all stop and stare
                              I can't hide the tears, but I don't care
I'll never forget him (the leader of the pack)

The leader of the pack - now he's gone
The leader of the pack - now he's gone
