It is about a ship that left our port in November, 1975, with 26,000 tons of iron ore. It got caught in a storm and sank in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975. The song was a tribute to the 29 men who sank with the ship.

If anyone would like to hear it go to: Wreck Of The Edmond Fitzgerald
I never knew it was for real.

Nah, rookies the lot of you.................... Now here's a tune to drink Drano by............

Here's the most depressing one of all time.................. by B.J. Thomas, apparently this was before the "Raindrops Kept Falling on His Head"..... maybe that's the reason..........

      Billy And Sue

THIS IS A STORY ABOUT BILLY AND SUE
THEY WERE AS IN LOVE AS WERE ANY TWO
AND YET BILLY HAD TO DIE
AND WHEN YOU HEAR THE REASON WHY
YOU'LL HANG YOUR HEAD AND CRY

BILLY AND SUE MET THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
AND EVER SINCED LIVED BY THE GOLDEN RULE
      BEACAUSE THEY'LL DO UNTO OTHERS
WHAT YOU WOULD'NT WANT DONE TO YOU
YOU'D HAVE TO BE A FOOL

THIS MUTUAL AGREEMENT OF LOVE AND TRUST
      THEY WOULD TRAVEL THE ROAD
      TO MARRIAGE OR BUST
AND WHEN BILLY WAS OLD ENOUGH TO TAKE A WIFE
HE WAS OLD ENOUGH TO FIGHT FOR HIS COUNTRY
      AND HIS WAY OF LIFE

      SUES LETTERS CAME EVERY DAY
STRENGHTENED HIS CAUSE THEY SHOWED HIM THE WAY
TO FIGHT FOR HIS COUNTRY AND THE GIRL HE LOVED
      THATS A SOILDERS ONLY PAY

BUT THEN BILLY HEARD NO MORE FROM SUE
HE WAS WORRIED SICK BUT WHAT COULD HE DO
THE BULLETS WERE SCREAMING AS HE HUGGED THE GROUND
AND BACK HOME SUE WAS RUNNIN ROUND

BILLY WAS GETTIN LESS AND LESS STRONG
HIS HOPE HIS FATE WAS ALMOST GONE
AND THEN LIKE A MIRACLE THE LETTER APPEARED
BILLY TORE THE LETTER OPEN AND HE READ DEAR JOHN

A LOOK CAME OVER BILLY THAT WOULD SCARE A GHOST
FAMILIAR LOOK SEEN ON SOLDIERS COAST TO COAST
AND EVEN THOUGH THE AIR WAS FILLED WITH LEAD
BILLY JUMPED UP THEY SHOT HIM DEAD

BILLY WAS BURIED IN A FAR AWAY GRAVE
IT READ FOR HIS COUNTRY HIS LIFE HE GAVE
BUT THAT EPITAPH WAS ONLY A PART
HE DIDNT DIE FROM A BULLET BUT HE DIED FROM A BROKEN HEART

I've been avoiding mentioning Kenny Rogers' "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town", waiting for someone else to mention it.

But now that you posted that piece of crap, I no longer feel constrained.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

        “You shouldn't wear that body.”

I can't make you love me if you don't.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

With Margo Timmins hauntng voice and that slow sparse early Cowboy Junkies arrangement - with the steel guitar wrapping around Timmins voice, the interweaving harmonica, fiddle, mandolin, accordion and slow brushed drums, all set nicely in a minor key - this one provides a pretty good downer:

              TO LOVE IS TO BURY

I buried him down by the river
'cause that's where he liked to be
And every night when the moon is high
I go there and weep openly

              He and I were married
By this river 'neath this willow tree
And with God and friends witnessing it
He pledged his life to me

              To me he was Earth
And I rooted in his soil
I to he was Sky vast and free
Of the burdens from which he toiled

Then one night a terrible fight
              Words spoken better left unsaid
With his wedding vows ringing in my ears
He gave his life to me

They say to love is to bury
Those demons from which we all hide
But tonight by this river 'neath this willow tree
Becoming one of Earth and Sky

Their cover of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" in the same album is also pretty somber. In fact, the whole "Trinity Session" album is about one half hour of some of the most hauntingly beautiful somber and depressive music you'll ever find.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

              “You shouldn't wear that body.”

                One of My Top Ten

                Artist/Band: Lynn Loretta
                Lyrics for Song: Women's Prison

I'm in a women's prison with bars all around
I caught my darlin cheatin thats when I shot him down
I caught him in a honky-tonk with a girl I used to know
The door to my cell is open wide and a voice cries out oh no

The judge says I'm guilty my sentence is to die
I know I've been forgiven but the price of love is high

The crowd outside is screamin' let the murderer die But above all their voices I
                can hear my mama cry

I'm sittin' here on death row and Lord I've lost my mind
For love I've killed my darlin and for love I'll lose my life

I can hear the warden coming From the clinging of his keys
But when they come to get me He'll have to drag me off my kness
The door to my cell swings open It's time for me to go
The priest is reading my last rights He says dying's part of livin' ya know

And there's a crowd outside screamin' let that murderer fry
But above all their voices You can hear my mama cry

Now they've strapped me in the chair And covered up my eyes
And the last voice I hear on Earth Is my mama's cry
                Lawren

I think George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today" should be included in the group.

Wow, this is an old thread. Just thought of one more-- Eve of Destruction by Barry Mcguire. And then there's Bob Dylan---Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands, Hurricane, and maybe for some- Desolation Row.

The most depressing saddest song for me was a favorite song when it came out. It really rocks but it reminds me of my very young nephew who ended up with an aggressive cancer and he quickly passed. Guns & Roses - Sweet Child of Mine
