  • Happy Mother's Day !!!

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers, everywhere. I hope you have a wonderful day!!!........

    The Story of Mother's Day

The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday". Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter*), "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England.
During this time many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch.

As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honor the "Mother Church" - the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration . People began honoring their mothers as well as the church.

In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle hymn of the Republic) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized Mother's Day meetings in Boston, Mass ever year.

In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.

Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.

      You Were There...

You were there when we took our first steps,
And went unsteadily across the floor.
You pushed and prodded: encouraged and guided,
Until our steps took us out the door...
You worry now "Are they ok?"
Is there more you could have done?
As we walk the paths of our unknown
You wonder"Where have my children gone?"
Where we are is where you have led us,
With your special love you showed us a way,
To believe in ourselves and the decisions we make.
Taking on the challenge of life day-to-day.
And where we go you can be sure,
In spirit you shall never be alone.
For where you are is what matters most to us,
Because to us that will always be home...

      Happy Mother's Day

My husband hasn't said anything yet. He's been working on his collector car, cleaning his fishing boat, etc. I'm not surprised, as it is also the fishing opener weekend. However, should I drop any hints or just harbor my resentment?

It may be important to note that he has forgotten previous birthdays, anniversaries, etc. many, many times.

On a lighter note, my parents and sister called. I enjoyed going out with them and two aunts last night.

              Happy Mother's Day!

We had a nice lunch in the city at Serafina, around the corner from the Manhattan Club (much better than one downtown on Lafayette, which is awful). Then went to check out a friend's new apartment, and took a lovely walk through Central Park before heading home.
Time to think about dinner, and I ain't cookin'!

Jana, I hope Father's Day is given equal treatment when the time comes

Sounds like a really fun day!!! The weather was great for a walk through the park, and your lunch turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

Hope you had a great dinner, too.

We just got back home from a day at my brother's house. He cooked dinner for me, and my mom. It was great, the guys did all the work, and us ladies just sat around eating, drinking, and chatting.

Good for you Angela, no work for once on a holiday

I didn't work after all and I was able to spend the day with DH and kids. We drove into Manhattan, walked around Northern Central Park, then drove down to the Village and had dinner at a BBQ place. All in all it was a nice day.

Sorry I am a day late to wish all you moms out there a happy mothers day. It took much longer to get home from VA than what we had planed.

Sunday evening my 3 yr old was emptying the frig looking for "gredients" to make a Mother's Day cake. He needed "four bananas, three marshmallows, and one BIG piece of chocolate". That made my day! The next morning, the first thing he said coming downstairs to the kitchen was "what day is it today? I sure hope it's Hunter Day!"

                        You've gotta love them.

                            Happy Mothers Day!

Took my mom and her friend to Reno for a day of fun. Stayed at WorldMark Reno and had a great time. While driving I got to listen to them reminiscing about their childhood and youth ... so many stories...
