  • Do you like Gurney's? Do you wish you could go there any time all year long?

Well, someone at Gurney's has found the answer for you!

They have announced an annual PRIVATE beach club membership....what's included? Beach, lounges, umbrellas, beach bar, spa membership, 10% discount, and more! All of these fabulous amenties can be yours, as they say, for a price.

What's that you ask? click here and scroll down toward the next to last page....but hold on to your seats, you will fall off your chair laughing when you read it!

We own at Gurney's, and we get all that for the price of ownership! We sold one of our weeks, and have one left, we've been considering selling it, and now, with this "value" added....I don't think we should sell....

    Katiemack,

They have been offering this for some time. What I find disturbing about it, is that it really dilutes the value for owners, because for people that own/rent homes in the area on other than Beachfront, it is really not a bad deal, and I'm betting it will add to the crowds considerably in the summer. Thank goodness that beach is so huge! (Though I wonder how they handle parking, which is tough enough in May)

Considering summer rentals inland go for $20,000-$70,000 less than OF rentals (yes, per season, though I am just guesstimating), a mere $5000 for a membership at Gurney's would be a great investment. If I owned in Montauk, and were made of money (which I would be if I owned in Montauk at this point), I would consider it.

Gurney's is having trouble maintaining their sprawling property on MFs and hotel guests. With all the alternatives for good restaurants sprouting up in the last 15-20 years, people aren't using it as a 'destination resort' the way they used to. So this is one way they're trying to increase income.

I didn't realize they had been offering it for some time, and I sure understand why they might want to increase revenue, as the area is competitive. I still find the price tag for an annual membership incredulous! We sold our one week for $2,100. For the annual MF of $874... it seems to me more folks would be anxious to own at Gurney's and resales would be snapped up...but it doesn't seem to be the case.

What amazes me, when I look at pricing for so many things nowadays, my question is "how on earth are folks making the money to pay for these things!" With so many jobs outsourced and many corporations doing layoffs and cost cutting, I still don't comprehend how much money is out there! I am so out of touch!

I don't think the locals are really tuned in to the timeshare availability. If they were, you're right, they'd be crazy not to buy.

I still cringe when I think of how little we sold our house in Easthampton for 13 years ago... but, alas, we needed a primary residence closer to the city

I feel your pain! But we had the same thing when we sold our home on Long Island to move to AZ.....two years later they were selling for $40,000 more! But if we had waited, we would have been outpriced in AZ and couldn't have afforded to move there.....so our motto: "don't look back! you'll just bump into something!"

The executives doing the lay-offs and the outsourcing are the people that can afford vacation homes in the Hamptons....

Does Gurney's offer day use for owners, or can you only use the beach and facilities while you are staying there? If they offer day use, that would be a way better deal than this annual club....

As far as I know owners have access to the beach and property all year long...but since we have been in Arizona now for 15 years, we don't use it like we did when we lived on L.I. I used to drive to Gurney's once a month and give myself a spa day...and we used to take advantage of owner's rates for special events like Mother's Day and Valentine's.....but now, the airfare would take away any savings!

I will be there next week. We look forward to going but I have learned my lesson. I have a Friday check in but I am not leaving until midnight. The traffic heading east on a Friday holiday night is not something I wish to repeat. If I came across a week that I could make use of I would buy there but for me using it for just a holiday weekend does not pay. I could go to the hotel next door and just pay about $150 a night for 2 nights.

                        Katiemack,

I'm from Long Island also. Have lived her in Arizona for 12 years. We are going back home in a couple of weeks and will be staying in Montauk Point for a couple of nights. Last time we stayed at the Royal Atlantic Beach Resorts and are thinking of staying there again. Do you have any other suggestions. I didn't not realize Gurney resales were so reasonable.

                          Hi, Eileen,
If I remember the Royal Atlantic Resorts are pretty near town? I think we stayed there many years ago on a quick weekend trip, and then we bought at Gurney's.

We enjoy the gourmet food shop Citarella's in East Hampton. We used to go to the Barefoot Contessa's shop, but she is now in the TV business...the shop is gone. Citarella Fine Foods - http://www.citarella.com

If you see a spot along Montauk Highway with a big sign LUNCH (on the water side, North) make note of it. If it is lunch time, stop in...you can get some really tasty food there. Most locals refer to it as LUNCH, but it is called the Lobster Roll...

As for accommodations, I think you picked up a nice spot, close to town and on the water. If you have a small kitchen you will do just fine. The IGA is probably within walking distance.

There is a place called Harvest, near the gas station around the IGA, which is fantastic...Bigfrank tipped us onto that one. Need Reservations! Also,Pacific East, I think is the name of the other one that Frank loves...it is on the way to Montauk Harbor.

Gozmans Dock has some shops and some restaurants, and the fishing pier is close if you want to go out. Gosman's Dock - Montauk, NY - Restaurant, Inlet Cafe, Clam Bar, Topside, Fish Market, Stores

And since you will be near Gurney's, do stop by the resort, and have lunch or dinner....they usually have a prix fix before 6 PM, you can call and make reservations....they have a great chef. Or just stop in at the little bistro for a quick lite bite.

Say hello to the Atlantic ocean for us! We will not be heading over that way for another year!

If I can help with anything else...let me know.

Oh, if you like theater or art, East Hampton has lots of fun activities ...here is a link to Guild Hall

                            Eileen,

I have stayed at 'The Surf Club' in Montauk, a number of times, and think it's also very nice. It's on the water, and in walking distance to town.

There is a chain out east called 'Dune Resorts'. They own The Surf Club, in Montauk, as well as a number of other locations, through-out the East End. They are not hotels. They are Co-Ops, and very similar to timeshares, with full kitchens, 1 & 2 bdrms, etc. Here is their link.........

This was featured on Rachel Ray's $40 dinner meals show on the food network. My wife and son both tried it and both enjoyed it. Cost is expensive

No it is called East by Northeast which is the same owners as the Harvest. It has an asian flair to it and is much more classy with better sorandings and service. Food here is also IMO better
Now for the undiscovered gem and for the 2nd best sunset out in Montuck go to the Montucket if you can fnd it. Only the locals know about it. If you are on the road going towards Montauck Manner stay to your left do not go onto the road to MM, As you are going up the hill right by MM you will see a block in the middle of the hill on your left side. There is a light there as well. Make a left then another left and take that straight down for about a half mile. When you come out of the woods you will see a parking lot most likely full if it is around 5pm. The place looks like nothing but the outside view is great. The steaks are very good there and well priced. The only better view is Navy Road which I hear might be opening again soon.
