I loved those big peonies when I was a little kid cause my grandma had them. But as I got older, wiser, more educated etc., I listened to the Flower Nazis They told me the peonies were junk, messy, and that I could do better. Dare I mention that I also liked the lowly petunia that every neighborhood grandma had in their garden or house border in this northern climate. Well now that I'm older, the flower Nazis can stick some Round-up up their butt because I still like peonies and my planters are full of petunias. If I could grow a bougainvilla here I would because they are so showy and remind me of the Carib. We're trying some Hibiscus, but they can really only survive here indoors. Love anything tropical looking that will grow in our northern climate.

Most plants don't grow well where I live @ 9000' in Colorado. Between the snow, cold, wind, poor soil, short growing season, and munch-happy critters not much survives. We don't even have grass. But I've watched a peony in the neighborhood come back faithfully and bloom profusely for several years running even when the house sat empty, so recently I risked it and planted one. Two snowstorms and two hailstorms later the plant is doing just fine and now the flowers are starting to open. Peony power!

I have two favorites, which I'm currently growing here in Texas: Hibiscus and Bird of Paradise. Everytime I see them bloom, it reminds me of Hawaii. How I love that place!!! Here's two pics of my favorite flowers that we took while in Kauai.

For all you poeny fans, could you help me with my dilemma. My great aunt used to grow a deep, dark pink peony. I can't find that shade in the stores, however they have a "red" variety. Do you think these will bloom dark pink or red?

I can remember these when I was very young so these are at least 45 yrs old.

Here is a nice site with dozens of peonies. I'm sure you can find what you are looking for here.
The Peony Garden
I had originally ordered a 3 pack of peonies from White Flower Farms but I didn't see them on-line. Supposedly "red" "pink" and "white". The red is actually more like a magenta pink. Similar to this one: The Peony GardenLawren
