  • website hosting?

My professional organization would like to start an informational website. We have seen places where you can buy the site name for a nominal fee. But then we see the "hosting" option, which costs a lot more. Since none of us are computer savvy, I'd like to know if hosting is necessary, and if so, what should we look for? Thanks for any information anyone can offer.

I have an account with godaddy. There are lots out there. As you said, to register a domain is relatively inexpensive ($9). Hosting a domain isn't that expensive either. If you look at godaddy, their's range from $4 / month and up.

Typcially it's getting your website created and that's what costs some money. However, a lot of these website places have website templates that you can buy for a couple hundred dollars. I paid someone develop ours that does website design in his spare time.

We did our own website, but we have hosting and e-mail accounts as well. They can be pretty inexpensive if they are simple, but interactive sites and lots of site info costs more. Buy only what you need. I have other sites- actually a web page that suits my needs and only once did I exceed the bandwidth.
