  • We had to cancel our European River Cruise

We have wanted to do this cruise from Amsterdam to Vienna on the Maine, Rhine and Danube for a couple of years, and we finally booked it last February. But we had to cancel last week due to a series of health problems for Gerry. Yes, we are sad about it, but I would rather have my husband of 55 years than take the trip....and, yes, we did buy trip insurance.

Gerry had a mild heart attack March 9 and came home looking better than ever. He was having kidney problems, but was obeying the doctors orders. After a discussion with our Nephrologist, it was decided that Gerry should have a 'fistula' (joining a vein & artery) made/done on his left arm, in preparation for dialysis IF and when he needed it. He went in for the surgery on Monday, June 18. He really never got better and on Thursday night he told me he was having problems breathing. When the breathing didn't get better, I drove him to our local hospital, arriving about 10 p.m. I called our DD (the RN) and she came to the hospital. The ER doc finally came in and told us he had pulmonary edema and his kidney's had failed and would need immediate dialysis. That all happened the next day.

On Saturday, we talked to the cardiologist after a Echo Cardiogram was done and we were told that Gerry had 'very probably' had a second M.I. while under anesthetic on Monday, killing his kidneys, putting him into congestive heart failure, followed by the pulmonary edema. It was decided that a Cardiac Catherization could be done (the dye would have killed his kidney's before, and no one wanted that done at that time), so he was transported to Punta Gorda and the Charlotte Medical Center (EXCELLENT Medical Center..EXCELLENT care) for the procedure. They found a 95% blockage in one of the main arteries to his heart. He is now a card carrying Stint owner

With the dialysis he had on Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday, they pulled over 4 1/2 liters of fluid from him. He went from 210 to 180...definately NOT the diet most of us would want to try.

But he is home and feeling better and will be on dialysis 3 days a week, 4 hours each day...his butt gets sore! But he is home and getting stronger and we are both learning a new diet for a diabetic/cardiac/renal patient! His spirits are pretty good, although he still gets discouraged with this sudden change of lifestyle, but I've told him we'll get through this together.

I'm not asking for sympathy...just prayers for Gerry to get through this. That is a lot to go through in 5 days. And to remind people that IF you are a diabetic or have high blood pressure, please, please do what your doctor says, and follow the right diet. Anything to preserve those kidneys!!

JOann, I sent you an email, but I just wanted to let you know how much I"ve been thinking of you and Gerry. What a rough time you are going thru right now. It will get better, esp with your faith. Hugs, Shaggy

All I could think of as I read this was "what brave people ... what a loving couple"! I admire your faith and determination, and will add the both of you to our thoughts and wish you the fastest of healing and the kind of rebound that will say, LIFE is GREAT. Good luck with it all, and good thoughts go out to you both.

            Jo,
Prayers out to both of you. What an ordeal in such a short time. Thank goodness he received good medical care and you were home when this all happened.

JoAnn, my heart goes out to you. My DD was dx with diabetes at age 2. I know the odds are she will face complications at some point in her life. When/if she does, I hope she has as supportive a spouse as you are by her side.

Glad you had trip insurance! I'll be interested to hear how quickly they process your claim and if they give you any hassle with it.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

What a stressful and overwhelming series of events for you both. It sounds like they got a handle on everything quickly, which is definitely in his favor.

You are both in my prayers.

So sorry to hear about your missed dream cruise, but hopefully you will get another chance down the road, when things have calmed down.

How sad for both of you that your husband got sick right before his trip so you had to cancel it. You must be so thankful that he is doing better. I hope he will keep improving so that you can go on your river cruise later.

I admire your positive outlook through such a stressful time. Sending good thoughts your way and wishes for a continued speedy recovery for Gerry. The trip, in the big scheme of things, is indeed unimportant.

Sounds about right..and that was in just 24 hours (two treatments in that time). Don't know what they got off from the other 2 or 3 treatments that came before he came home. But we know his total weight loss was 25-30# from Friday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon. But, there were days he only had one or two meals because of the various tests and procedures they were doing on him. He will try to maintain that weight now.

Thank you for all your prayers and good thoughts. The prayers have helped me get through all of this. I am a great believer in prayer.

I could not have made it without our daughter, Peg, who, not only spent a lot of time with us, but was our "interpreter"!! I was on brain over load with all the medical jargon . She spent part of every day in Lehigh at the hospital, and she took off work so she could go to Charlotte Medical Center with me last Sunday.

It wasn't all hospital though, she made sure we ate...and ate well!! (If you ever get to Punta Gorda, have dinner at "The Turtle Club" on Marion!!!) And, last Tuesday, while Gerry was on dialysis, she and I went to Fisherman's Village, had lunch and did some shopping, like all good women are supposed to do!!

As for the River cruise???? Medicare does not pay for services overseas and that one would be a difficult logistical problem to set up dialysis in various towns along the way. But I am looking into cruises that offer "dialysis" while cruising. As for in the US, arrangements can be made to have treatments along the way. We will be looking into that for his annual Pheasant hunting trip in Watertown SD this October, with the same bunch of guys he has been going with since 1980. We know there is a dialysis center there, so it's finding him a spot, and we know "the guys" will get him there an back...even if they have to drop him off on their way to the casino. Our son will be making the trip with his Dad.

He probably had been slowly retaining addition fluid over the past weeks/months due to cardiac insufficiency - when the **** hit the fan and he had the dialysis plus diuretics to correct the pulmonary edema - ALL the excess fluid came out. it would be normal for him to regain a few pounds and his weight will fluctuate day to day because his kidneys are no longer functioning - all the fluid he takes in will be 'drained' on dialysis day. They will keep a close watch on his weight and lab values.

I will keep you and DH in my thoughts and prayers.
