  • Question about Boston suburbs and Amtrak

We are attending an event in the Marblehead, MA area and need to get back to New York City quickly on a Sunday morning. My thought is to take Amtrak back...but can anyone tell me which station might be closest to that area?

I will have my daughters with me so I don't want to have to change trains if possible. Also, we are talking about Thanksgiving weekend when it may be very crowded on the trains. Is it possible to get an Amtrak class that has reserved seats?

    Thanks for any help,

    Sharon

    Amtrak

    Sharon,
As the old Maine joke goes, "You cant get there from here...."
Marblehead on north shore of Boston...Amtrak leave from South Station....Commuter trains from north shore go to North Station.
From North Station you will need to take bus or taxi to South Station.
My suggestion is to have friend or family member drive you directly to South Station or take a limo or taxi. Limo would cost you about $90...
Here is link to one limo company and a google search will provide you with others:
    https://northshoreshuttle.hudsonltd.net/res

Local taxi companies may have less expensive flat fee.
It will save you a lot of time and frustration, especially if you are already pressed for time.
    Hope this helps
    Best wishes,
    Paul

Last year DH and DD needed to get to Needham on a Sunday. The easiest way turned out to be taking the train to South Station on Saturday, renting a car there, driving out to Needham and staying in a local hotel there overnight. Then they attended the event starting early Sunday, drove back to South Station that night, and took the bus back to NYC.

The commuter trains that would have taken them to Needham have very very limited schedules over the weekend.

They were coming back to NYC rather than CT, but they said the train was much faster and easier than the bus. They would have taken the train home, but the price on a Sunday night was prohibitive, while the bus price was something like $15 each.

Buses leave from South Station as well

        Sharon
You didnt say how you arriving...if you are flying in, you can rent a car at airport and return to airport and take taxi over to South Station (about 15 minutes away)... Also all the buses to NYC also leave South Station...
My son use to live in Manhattan and also took bus back and forth from NYC to Beantown...I think they leave like every 45 to 60 minutes and I think you can reserve seats... FYI...

          Thanks guys.

A lot easier actually...we are all driving up to Marblehead on Friday, but my daughters and I have to get into New York City on Sunday because we have tickets to a show. So, my husband will drop us at the nearest station and then drive home with my son...but I didn't want to have to worry about being stuck in traffic and missing the show (Wicked).

Have him drop you at South Station or at a Red line T stop. It will save you from taking the commuter rail, followed by a couple of switches on the T for the different lines before you end up at South Station. I don't think traffic downtown should be too bad on that weekend.

I've attached a Red line link here: http://www.mbta.com/uploadedFiles/documents/redline.pdf

            Good luck!
