  • Roomba - filling a vacuum in people's lives???

Study shows owners get sucked in by robotic vacuum
They give them nicknames, worry when they signal for help and sometimes even treat them like a trusted pet.

A new study shows how deeply some Roomba owners become attached to the robotic vacuums, and suggests there's a measure of public readiness to accept robots in the house — even flawed ones.

The first phase of the project, which involved monitoring an online forum devoted to the site, revealed people who named their Roombas, traveled with them and one owner who introduced the machine to his parents.

Others reported their efforts to "Roomba-ize" their homes so the robot could roam the floors more easily. Some bought new rugs, pre-cleaned the floors to clear the robot's route and purchased new refrigerators with a higher clearance so the machines could clean under them easier.

"I was blown away," Young Sung said. "Some Roombas break a lot, they still have functional problems. But people are willing to make that effort because they love their robot enough."

The next part, which studied 30 committed Roomba users, revealed 21 of them gave their robots names. And 16 others talked about the robot as a "he," arbitrarily assigning the robot a gender.
So what gender is your Roomba????
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

    “You shouldn't wear that body.”

Ours is a "she" and her name is Rosie. I don't love her as much as I love my real pets but we're pretty crazy about her. It's great having a clean house that I didn't have to vacuum.

We use her twice a day, once in the main part of the house, recharge, then put her to work in the master bed/bath area. However we've never taken her on vacation (that's what timeshares are all about, let someone else clean the unit!).

She isn't perfect. We do move a few pieces of furniture (only easy things like the bar stools) since we've learned what she can get stuck under (hate that sad beeping noise when she's stuck). And, yes her life has not been trouble free. In fact, like a cat, she is on her third life. Still under warranty and iRobot has cheerfully replaced parts and even her whole body for free when she has broken down.

But I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. It's cheaper than hiring a maid!

We also really like her brother Scooby (our Scooba pet).

Mine has to be a female because the male who lives here doesn't do housework. No name though but she does have a sister. A scooba.

Mine is a boy and I don't buy him clothes as I like to watch him run around cleaning ala naturale.

His name is Galileo from StarTrek's shuttle craft <because he docks!>. He boldly goes where no one has vacuumed before.

My sister says hers is female, because it does what she wants it to.

DW is emphatic that ours is male. She says no woman would ever be that random.

I love the "entrepreneurial" spirit of these young kids to start a business going just to get Mom a Christmas present. How cute and so are the Roomba outfits.

It's at the kids' site that Lawren linked to.

My old Roomba had the creative (not) name of Roombie.

I love my new Roomba from HSN but haven't named it, yet. I hope to do better this time. The improvements on the new Roomba are great. Check it out on the video at HSN.com - The Original Site for Home Shopping I just put in the URL and the rest popped up!

                        I named our GPS Gypsy.........
