Interesting article on sleep patterns among couples:

Men sleep better next to their mates
This doesn't surprise me. My DH falls asleep much easier than I do, sleeps much longer than I do, and when asleep, sleeps like a log.

Between him and the dog, ( yes, my dog snores, too) there are many nights that I'm out of bed before 5.

Then he wonders why I'm a little cranky in the morning.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

I am the snorer in our family - and it certainly causes a great deal of stress to both DH and I. To him when I wake him up, to me when he keeps waking me to tell me to stop snoring!

That's how it goes in my house, but I am not the snorer. I can take it for one night, but by the second I am really exhausted and cranky. Perhaps I should trade with you

To all those snorers and spouses of snorers please consider a sleep study to see if you might have sleep apnea. My DH went to sleep study and stopped breathing over 90 times in a two hour time frame. He had surgery (didn't help the snoring at all) and is now supposed to wear a breathing machine at night to force air. He is not good about wearing it but is foolish as sleep apnea is very dangerous. I can sleep next to him if I fall asleep first but if when one of our children makes a sound across the house (must be a mother's instinct) I wake up.

May I just say Amen to that. I worked at a company that made the CPAP units. My wife would fall alseep while we were talking (Hey-no wise cracks ). She fell asleep at a party at our house while sitting between two guests. After 7 years, I finally got my wife to do a study. She also stopped breathing several times for an 'extended period'. The study people woke her to put a CPAP on her, they were worried about her. Since she has her own unit, she sleeps better and is awake during the day. We still sleep in different bedrooms at home and on vacations. Between my roaming the bed and sleepwalking, she sleeps better alone.

I'd have never made it to a year of marriage had I employed that tactic (my wife snores due to issues with her septum which have been partially corrected surgically). I just wear ear plugs and take a sleep aid (herbal) when I wish to sleep the whole night in the same bed. Then there's the issue of the cat digging its claws into me.... hmmm..

That begs for a link to the classic Gilda Radner - Candice Bergen SNL uvula sketch. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any links to it. But here they are in the "Extremely Stupid People" sketch instead (with the great ad lib when Bergen flubs her line).
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

                    “You shouldn't wear that body.”

This was he same thing with my wife. She was doing what Don said his wife was and she was starting to fall sleep while driving home form work as well. When she went to do the sleep study they stopped her after about 30 minute and gave her CPAP machine. She hasn't been without since and it probably saved her life.

DH has sleep apnea and it took YEARS for him to do a sleep test. Then he did it, they decided he had it and he needed to come in for testing with a CPAP, then he put THAT off for most of a year. Now he has it and it has definitely improved his life--he's much more awake and alert during the day, gets more done. The machine is very quiet and we both got used to him wearing it pretty quickly.

Sleep apnea puts a terrible strain on your heart and lungs. My SIL is a nurse and when she found out that DH had sleep apnea and wasn't treating it, she got very upset and gave him an earful. That's when he agreed to finally get the machine. There are heart problems in his family anyhow. Please, everyone, please get a CPAP and use it if you have sleep apnea! It can change your life! Wouldn't it be great to have more energy?

Both hubby and I snore. What's worse . . . our 45# dog (who does sleep in the bed with us on most nights) also snores. It is actually pretty funny if you ask me, especially when she's snoring.

For us, it is usually whoever gets to sleep first, gets the best night's sleep. If one or the other of us wakes up to pee, then they may be relegated to the guest's bedroom bed. The dog usually stays with or follows me

As for the sleep apnea test, I did do the sleep study earlier this year. While I had mild apnea it wasn't enough in terms of numbers of "episodes" to qualify for the insurance covering it or providing the cpep machine. Ironically, the duration of my nonbreathing was a bit concerning, but not life threatening they said. They gave me a nasal spray (flonaise) for bedtime which helps to keep me clear as most of my problem is allergy related (and probably not helped by the sleeping dog in my bed).

I will probably to another sleep study after the first of the year to see how things are. For now, however, I'm living in one city during the work week and my husband's in another. Hopefully we'll get through the snoring on the weekends!

Greg snores like a freight train. We have a two bedroom condo, and use our second bedroom as an office. It got so bad that we bought a murphy bed for the office - at least I get a comfortable night's sleep in a bed, and not on the loveseat.

I don't really mind, we start off in the same king size bed with the dog in the middle. Sometime between 1 and 3 a.m., I wander into the other room. It's like having a baby, sometimes you actually forget you got up, it becomes so automatic.
