  • Unsolicited Credit Card

My spouse received a credit card in the mail this past week. She did not apply for it and because of the circumstances it appears not to be fraud but a concerted effort by Citi Group. The actual credit card had the normal call this number to activate sticker but printed on the 8.5x11 paper the credit card was stuck to was the statement "If you do not want the Citi MasterCard call 800-432-0282 and we will close the account."

This is dangerous stuff. Who do I complain to?

Although a little different case, I have tried calling Equifax about credit card offers to my first wife who had passed way about 15 years ago. Equifax was 1) difficult to find a human contact, 2) of no help at all.

Credit card companies and credit companies are difficult to deal with. I think if you called the credit card company, they can at least be told to take you or your family off their mailing list.

You could write the general correspondence office for Citi Credit in Jacksonville or you could try the muckety mucks:

Chairman and CEO Charles O. (Chuck) Prince III
            COO Robert (Bob) Druskin
Chief Operations and Technology Officer Kevin M. Kessinger

They probably all have offices in the 388 Greenwich St building in NYC.

of course if you had asked me that question two years ago I could have told you without having to look anything up. I handled the brokerage division.

Maybe and maybe not. I'm sure somewhere along the line Spence &/or his DW <and she must be a "dear" wife for putting up with him > have some kind of dealing with CitiGroup. We all do. They are into everything.

I believe if you have a relationship of any kind that they can contact you anyway they'd like.

Now can anyone figure out how to make American Express and Discover stop sending us stuff?

For the longest time I would open all that CRA*, write void across the offer in heavy marker, fold everything up nicely and place it in their postage paid enelope and mail it back to them. Eventually I stopped getting their CRA*.

I look at junk mail the same as I look at spam. If you answer ( fight back for not wanting it ) they then know they have a good address and it won't stop. With all the stress in the world today why bother to let something as simply as junk mail get you on the offensive ? It is not worth it. Stress can kill ! Grind it up ! Out of sight out of mind. There is so much more people could do with their time that will make the world a better place. Sooner or later the junk will stop coming. Don't stir the pot, just let it boil away.

For some reason I thought it was illegal to send an actual useable unsolicited credit card to someone. I may be wrong. If it is a violation of law, I have no idea who to report it to.

On the subject of junk mail solicitations for various money offers credit or otherwise, I have been on a crusade to call the opt-out number on every offer I receive. It has taken about 60 days but the reduction in crap mail has been astounding. It works.

I haven't gotten unsolicited credit cards, but I regularly receive checks in the mail that will charge my credit card if cashed. I am always afraid that these things will be delivered to someone else by mistake. I just shred them when they come, but they aggravate me.

I agree about those checks. I wonder how to stop them?

In today's Boston Globe there is an article regarding this very issue. Here's the link

Spence, I would think from this article that your wife or you once had a Macy's Card and it has not been used in quite some time, but the account never closed.

Thanks, I have no idea what credit cards that wife has or had, but chances are, you are right.

I've had the same experience before, all ya have to do is E-mail the credit card company your with & tell them to stop sendin those checks in the mail with or without your statement. I just did this bout a month ago & they have stop once again. They are famous for this but its wrong but you have to contact them to stop the process.

As far as the OP question, you need to opt-out at one of the websites for this, same as your phone #. I don't have that website as I'm at work but will try to get it for ya. ~

Here is the website for the Federal Trade Commission; there is an optout link and some interesting information regarding various issues.

There appears to be a time limited version and a lifetime version.
