I was at one time, when I was young and naive...I saw no value to it then and I was young and naive! My husband wanted to go to one of their presentations a few years back, he asked more questions than when I joined 20+ years ago, but I already had my experience which was eveytime I called to see about getting a lower price, they never seemed to have it...big scam!

We're members of Direct Buy. We joined almost 14 years ago after buying our house. It wasn't as expensive then as it is now and we did get our monies worth because we furnished our house by buying the furniture from them. You have to know what you're buying and if it is worth the money to buy from them or from the store. More often than not, you do save big on furniture. If they ask me to join now though, I wouldn't do it. I don't remember how much our membership was but it was definitely less than a third of what they are asking now.

We use to be members here. After two years and not buying a single thing from Direct Buy, we requested a refund, which was over $4000. Surprisingly, they granted it. But not after telling us, "You will no longer be a member in good standing with Direct Buy". Oh well..

Their website is a MAJOR joke. It is not user nor search friendly. It takes so long to find the item you're looking for. Then once you've finally narrowed it down to the right category, they don't have the product. Each time we've requested a price, they have ALWAYS been higher than what we could get it at from retail stores. With service and shipping fees added, it just did not make sense (to us) to be members at Direct Buy.

For more complaints (and even some comments) on this company, visit this website:

Ripoff Report: By Consumers, For Consumers

Then enter Direct Buy in the search field. You'll see what people are saying about this company.

All I can say is... Good riddance.

My wife has bought baby furniture and a new bed for my son so far. We are remodeling 2 houses and the contractor we are using is also a member. He has been advising on what to buy thru them and what he can get a better buy on. We have found that it is a good way to buy upper scale for the same price we would have settled at say Home Depo or Lowes. I believe we will recover much savings in our situation.

The best savings on items you can buy through Direct Buy are furniture purchases.

Spence, I have heard more bad things than good about Direct Buy. I would stay away from any organization that generates a high volume of complaints.

We joined because at the time we were planning on completely re-modeling the kitchen. We wound up not doing it, but did buy additional cabinets. We re-couped the cost of the membership in the savings on the cabinets over the prices from Home Depot and Loews. We felt we got better cabinets, too. Other than the cabinet purchase, we've used them very little. We wouldn't have joined had it not been for the re-modeling plans, and I felt better about it since we essentially broke even with the cabinets.

Co-workers went on one of their presentations since they are contemplating building a new house. From his description it is much like a timeshare presentation. His calculations of the membership fee plus the selling price of their items made it not worth the money. In fact he told them they were out of their ever loving minds.

There were 3 other couples in the sales room with them. They were the only couple to not sign up.

This example shows that they are much like timesharing in that it can be a good deal if you use it more than once or twice!!

we joined 20 years ago, and used it only the first couple years. With Costco, home depot, best buy etc... It is now not worth it at all in my view. I do agree that furniture and higher end things were the best buys there..

                          Furniture

If you live on the east coast you should always try to buy furniture directly from North Carolina dealers. We saved thousands on an America Drew bedroom set. The guy at Raymour and Flanagan just about threw us out when we asked him to beat the price we were getting. Here is a link to the the kind of company we dealt with. The best way to do it is to shop around and find what you want. Then call and ask if they carry that brand and style. On the floor at R & F our set was over 8K. We got it for 3600 including delivery. Don't buy from any NC dealer that won't take credit cards. We had one place go belly up after we had paid. MasterCard refunded our money even thought it was 2+ months after they charged us. That's the other thing, everything is made to order so you have to wait 6 to 8 weeks to get it but the savings were well worth it...and no membership fees!

Not member, DW buy from eBay for kid's furniture. But go to costco / local store for furniture that we think will last longer.
