  • Milk $4.40 / gallon

No kidding. Was at the local major supermarket chain this morning. 1% milk price? $4.40/gallon.

I swear last week it was a $1 less....

Can't find anything on the 'net about this latest price increase.

Currently paying ridiculous prices for fresh veggies too. $2.49/lb zuchinni. $1.99/lb for green beans. That's more than quite a few meat selections.

About 15 or 20 years ago, I recall when a convenience store in California ran a promotion - gasoline or milk at the same price per gallon.

They were forced to stop the promotion when the state consumer protection agencies said it was illegal to sell milk that cheap - unfair to other milk sellers.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

    “You shouldn't wear that body.”

I bought a gallon of milk Thursday for $ 2.69. Beans are in the freezer, Italian Roma beans-home grown.

It's weird--1 percent was the Milk of the Week at ShopRite two weeks ago and I got a gallon for $2.49. Then I think it was $4.19 a couple of days ago. What's with these cows?

As the article said...the demand for corn to make ethanol has risen, so the cost has gone up...not only for the ethanol makers, but the farmers as well, who need corn products to feed their cattle/cows, and other livestock. Cereal will go up in price. Meat will go up.

In Northern Illinois, where we own a small farm, the corn crop was exceptionally good and the soy bean crop did as well. The farmers were extremely happy, because they were finally able to get ahead of the game. Their fuel prices went up, just as ours did. Fertilizers prices went up also.

So far the most we've paid for milk here is only $3.99. We watch the ads at all the stores and go where we get the best deal...and we only drink about a gallon a week.

Gerry's garden is keeping us in some fresh veggies right now. And there is a market about 20 miles away where we can get tomatoes, beans, peppers, corn and other veggies very cheap. We take a trip down there quite often. It's not going to get any better. Guess I'd better get out my canning equipment again.

I spend so much money on milk. We buy 4 gallons at a time. Most markets here will price their "lesser brand" at 2 for one price. I think I paid 2 for 6.29 last trip. If purchased separately it's like 3.99 per gallon. Before the markets started pricing it in 2fers-I bet I spent 80.00 plus a month on milk. We are only a family of four-but everyone drinks milk with dinner, etc. We could have a worse habit-I suppose.

I've been paying $4.69/gallon now for some time in CA, maybe since last Spring? I was shocked when it was $3.89, $4.19, $4.39...it keeps going up every couple of weeks .

Want me to interview one? Got a few head next door and a dairy down the street..

I still pay the same as you all. Our dairies grow most of their own feed. Still gotta run the tractors and transport the raw milk to the creamery and store. Only thing saving us is the cheap immigrant labor

The 2007 drought in parts of the US will also add to the cost of goods.

                      Milk Price

I just sent my daughter in to the small mop and pop store in our rural area in Northern NY. It was $4.39 for a gallon of 2%. It irks me less to pay that for milk than $3.45/gal for gas.

                        Milk

I understand that we are now importing milk, but that may be misinformation. In any event, few remember that the Feds, several years back, bought the milk cows from many dairy farmers if they would go out of business. Thus the price is somewhat artificial because so much competition has been eliminated.
As a kid growing up in rural Kentucky, we milked our cows by hand (no electricity), and put it in a cream seperator. We sold the cream to get a little cash money. The milk we drank was contemptiously called "blue-John" because everyone knew that if you had to sell your cream you were "pore", not just "poor".
Now that same type of milk goes for a premium. Go figure.

Is it any cheaper at places like BJ's or Sam's club?
It might be worth the membership??

We usually get our milk at Sam's or Costco here in CA. The white water (skim) was $2.70 & the 1% and 2% was $3.20 or $3.30, I'll have to double-check. It's Swiss Dairy at Sam's & Kirkland from Costco, but you can always call corporate to find out who their dairy farms are.
