  • My friend's grandmother just died...

And she was 111 years old!! She was born in 1895, and we were just talking about all the changes she must have seen in her life. Automobiles, electricity, indoor plumbing (she lived in rural Mississippi), television, antibiotics, space travel, airplanes, etc. I am 46. I remember the invention of panty hose, microwaves, videos, atari and subsequent video games, self-stick maxipads. Girls were not allowed to wear pants to school and on cold days we had to wear those flesh-colored tights under our skirts and knee socks. What do you remember?

How about the Hoffman "easy eye" television, with the round-ish green screen, in that huge cabinet?

I remember stockings with seams down the back.

I remember the first person in space.

I remember the first color television show we saw, and watching the Rose Parade for many years in black and white (the hosts would describe the colors to the audience)

I remember drive-in restaurants, not "drive thru."

I remember a time before Visa, Mastercard, and ATMs.

There was no teflon when I was little, and no microwaves, either.

We had an incinerator in the back yard for trash till they made us remove them, saying they caused smog. We removed them, and the smog only got worse.

I remember a lot more, but I'll give someone else a chance.

I remember: listening to the Lone Ranger, The Shadow, Mr. Kane (?) finder of missing persons on the radio every week; listening to The Big Band music, playing hide n go seek; riding streetcars in Chicago to go to school; gas & food shortages and their "stamps" to get both and blackouts during WWII; riding a double decker bus to downtown Chicago; seeing Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis on stage in downtown Chicago (either at the State & Lake or the Chicago theaters); flying in a big prop plane for the first time; riding in my great Aunt's rumble seat car...oh, what fun it was to ride in the rumble seat!
        Oh My, I AM old...

I remember getting dressed up, including white gloves!, to go shopping in the city, (San Diego).

I remember the door men and elevator operators at the department stores in the city. There were no malls, just downtown.

          I remember Disneyland being built.

I remember the San Diego Zoo was "deeded" to the children of San Diego, so children were always free.

I can remember having to flag the train to get it to stop for you.

            I remember Burma Shave signs...

I remember having a whopping choice of 3 channels on TV.

            I remember "The Millionaire."

I remember when the word "gay" meant happy and carefree.

I remember my mother waking the 4 of little kids us up at 3 AM to pile in the car for the 12 hour drive to the Cape for a week of vacation that was the highlight of our year, even though my baby sister screamed the whole time. I remember the windows being down the whole time, because this was long before the days of air conditioning in cars, and the smell of my car sickness permeated everything. I remember my mom getting us to play "I Spy" to keep us from killing each other in the back seat, as my dad grumbled loudly. I remember a cottage on low stilts that sat nestled in the dunes, far away from the beach, that had a screened porch and one tiny bathroom, and thinking it was the Ritz, and that life didn't get any better.

I remember having to wear a hat when going into church. I remember that every good, Catholic girl had a "chapel veil" in her purse, "just in case."

I remember my mom taking care of 4 kids, one of whom was severely disabled, making sure the house was spotless, that we all did our homework, had piano lessons, were always dressed neatly, and had a hot breakfast before leaving for school. Oatmeal took 20 minutes to cook properly. Dishwashers hadn't been invented yet, or if they had, "regular people" didn't have them. She had to hang clothes on a line outside in the spring and summer, and one that was in the basement in the winter. Everything had to be ironed, most starched. And one thing I don't remember is her ever complaining about how hard she worked or how tired she surely was.

I remember when I was in kindergarten wanting a pair of saddle shoes. My mom bought them for me when I was in 8th grade, and couldn't for the life of her figure out why I refused to wear them.

I remember my mom reading "Good Night, Moon" out loud.

            I remember masses in Latin.

I remember when nuns wore black habits and nurses wore white caps.

            I remember tutti-fruti ice cream.

I remember pillbox hats and beehive hairdos.

            I remember "spoolies."

I remember when annoying people were referred to as "pills," and women of questionable morals were referred to as "floozies."

I remember new frilly dresses and crinolines and a brand new hat for Easter. I remember patent leather Mary Janes.

I remember setting my hair on rollers with little points that stuck out to hold the hair tighter. I remember sleeping with my hair on rollers...

I remember the penny candy store.

I remember every boy having a coon-skin cap and a BB gun.

            I remember collecting trolls.

            I remember Huckleberry Hound.

I remember the whiff of ozone as my dad's elaborate toy train rounded the track. I remember the whistling "Barnum and Bailey's Circus" billboard that issued a train whistle when you pressed a button.

I remember Bobby and Annette in their mouse ears, and thinking that when I grew up, I wanted to be JUST like her!

I remember my mom's wringer washer in the basement.

I remember long before there were malls, the place to do clothes shopping was downtown on Main Street, with head-in parking.

            I remember baby-doll pajamas.

I remember my mom's stock company (elegant) dinner: Standing rib roast (now known as prime rib) with Yorkshire pudding and mushy peas. Dessert was always that chocolate-wafer-cookie-layered-with-whipped-cream dessert. A single maschino cherry always adorned the top. I remember the good china and silver being used.

            I remember Bissell carpet sweepers.

I remember my Shirley Temple doll. Also remember my first Barbie, with the strapless black and white stripe swimsuit and a blonde ponytail, and spike high heels. Also remember my little sister biting the arms off of her.

OK, Conchman. So you're just a baby and we're old goats...

As my mom used to say, "As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so shall you be."

Does anyone remember the show, "Queen For A Day?"

But Conchman, you are sure old enough to remember the beginning of MTV, laptops, space shuttle? I would think that there are more things that have been invented in the last ten years than in the 50 years prior (IMHO - no data to support that).
You know, I am a school nurse and I was calling a parent to tell her that her daughter had sustained a bruise due to an injury. I told her it was about the size of a 50-cent piece. The child looked at me and asked "what's a 50 cent piece?" ARGH!!
I remember the Twin Towers being erected. I remember my Dad talking about it for a couple of years prior - "wait til you see those towers - higher than the Empire State Building!"
I remember on Saturday afternoons watching Japanese dubbed Godzilla movies and Wide World of Sports. Channels 2 through 13 and you had to get up and walk across the room to change them!

YESSSS, jackio!! DH went to RPI with the son of the architect who designed them.

As for Saturday afternoons, I remember those godawful Godzilla movies, too. BTW, there's a show called MST3K ("Mystery Science Theatre 3000") that I love. It features many of those horrible movies with little critters and some guy silhouetted as if they were in a theatre watching them, and they all make wisecracks about the dubbing, the dialog, and the cheesy "special" effects.

And Wide World of Sports. "The Thrill of Victory...The Agony of Defeat..."

What a relief, Trevor! I was beginning to feel REALLY ancient!

I did mention the Mickey Mouse Club - talked about Annette in her Mouse ears and how when I was in kindergarten (maybe before- don't remember for sure) I wanted to be just like her.

I was going to edit my post to add Claribelle, but thought it was way too long already.

OK I'll give it a shot. I remember when:
MTV still played videos, Madonna was on American Bandstand, Michael Jackson had his original nose, the Challenger blew up, Ronald Reagan was shot, the first Persian Gulf war was shown on TV, I took an electric typewriter to college, we played stickball in the street and yelled, "Car!", we bought a remote control for the TV, a cordless phone, and a microwave, I saved my allowance to buy my first record "YMCA" by the Village People, I could leave at 8:00 on a summer morning and not return home until dinner...without my parents worrying, I actually did research papers at the library, I learned the Dewey Decimal System, Yankee catcher and Captain, Thurman Munson was killed in a plane crash, SS Bucky Dent hit that homerun against the Red Sox, Dave Winfield signed for over a million dollars a year, Pele' played for the Cosmos, we played Dodge ball in gym class, I had to go to bed in the summer when it was still light out, I had to address all adults with Mr. or Mrs, and lastly when I had a mullet and thought I was cool.

Wow! And I thought that would be difficult. Now, can you guess my age?
