  • Does anyone know anything about Wisteria?

I have a beautiful Chinese Wisteria that I trained into a tree that blooms prolifically. For those that don't know the difference between Chinese and Japanese, the Chinese blooms before it leafs out.
Anyway, while it was setting blooms this year, it was hit with a frost and all the blooms died. This morning, I took a walk in the yard to look at all the plants and noticed that there are absolutely no leaves starting to appear.
Yet, the sucker on the bottom has them.

Does anyone know if the lack of bloom has stymied the leafing and therefore will possibly kill the plant?
The reason I ask is because I would think the leaves act as a nourishing agent for the plant and no leaves=no future plant.

We lost our weeping birch tree this spring - it had started to get the 'little buds' and then nothing.
We have a triple stemmed birch and a 'regular' single stem that were not affected - it s the first time we have lost a 'major' sized plant.

I hope your wisteria can be saved. Check with your local garden center and see what they say.

What do I know? I know the rabbits like mine. All my new growth from last year was eaten this winter. Mine is coming back from the parts that the rabbits didn’t get.

It is likely yours will come back, it may try to put out leaves again soon, but if it doesn’t, you may loose all the old and will get new from the lower sections.

But as already been said, consult with a garden center.

When I saw the title to this thread, I thought Desperate Housewives live on Wisteria Lane.

I know diddly about wisteria except that it is beautiful. I know you spent a lot of effort training it to be a tree and sure hope it recuperates from the very nasty spring we had here in the northeast.

Our wisteria was unaffected by the frosts, but they are young and we can't tell yet if they speak Chinese or Japanese. You might try looking over at: GardenWeb - The Internet's Garden Community

Wow, I'm surprised they didn't get affected by the frost because I think you're slightly ?northwest of where I am.

Maybe because we sit up against a hill. I try to get zone 5 plants because of the difference in bloom times compared to my neighbor's flowers/plants.

Lawren, It took about 3-4 years to train as a tree, I'm going to wait it out and see what happens next year. I'll just feed it extra this year and hope for the best!
