Bugs are eating the leaves on my vegetable plants...Help!

    Has the repellants or stickies or dust take care of the bug problem?

    I have more weeds than bugs. Pretty good looking garden for me this year. Lettice has started to bolt, so that is gone, but other than that...

      Yes, so far, so good.

      The one that I like the best is "Organocide." It seems to be doing the trick, and it's one of the safest ones out there. The bugs are under control, but I did catch a couple of bunnies chomping on my parsley the other day. They seem to keep coming back, for seconds, and thirds. I thought about getting a fence, but haven't made it to the nursery to actually get one, yet.

      I had a lot of weeds, too. After weeding them all out over the weekend, I picked up more mulch, and put down a good 4 inches. Hopefully, that will do the trick.

      This gardening stuff, is a lot of work.

        Lots of work, but the sugar snap peas we've had this week made it seem worthwhile. My second lettuce crop is now ready and I have small green tomatoes and a small pepper. I expect the beans will be flowering soon.

          Emmmm, sugar snap peas are yummmy.

          I have a bunch of peppers, and tomatoes, too. Only the green peepers, tho. the red ones haven't shown up yet.

            Question....How can I tell which peppers are meant to be green, and which ones I should leave on the vine to ripen to red?

            I planted both red & green pepper plants not realizing at the time that they all start out green. Currently, all my pepper plants have little green peppers on them, so I looked for some info, and found this.......

            A. Sweet bell peppers can be orange, yellow, red, purple, brown, black, ivory or green, depending on the stage of ripeness and the variety.
            Green bell peppers are fully developed, but not ripe.
            All sweet bell peppers start out green, and change color as they ripen. (They also get sweeter).

            What can be confusing, is that there is also a variety that is green when ripe.
            The color depends on the specific variety, the most common variety is red when ripe.


            So--- Green sweet bell peppers start out green and are green when ripe.
            Red, yellow, etc. sweet bell peppers start out green and turn red when ripe.
            What you find in the store are usually either unripe green sweet bell peppers or unripe red ones.

            They will not be any of the other color varieties in the green stage because the other colors can be sold at a much higher price, so they are always allowed to ripen before being sold. The additional time it takes to ripen and change color accounts for part of the reason they are more expensive. Also, since they are ripe, they have a shorter storage time.

              The Romano beans are flowering. There must be nearly a bushel of peas ready or nearly ready to pick. As usual, the weeds are flourishing.

                We use sevin dust to rid the garden of misc. bugs. Read the label as it is a poison.

                  Angela green peppers are peppers that aren't ripe. You can pick whatever variety is of good size to use. Ripe peppers will turn red or whatever special variety you bought such as yellow, orange.

                  Husband went to the higher priced grocercy the other day. $5/lb for red peppers.

                      I don't know, it's very confusing. Some of my plants where labeled "red" with pics of red peppers on them, and some where labeled "green" with pics of green peppers on them. If I had known that they all start out green, and you need to leave the ones that are suppose to turn red growing for a longer time frame, I would have marked them. They look exactly alike, and I'm clueless to tell them apart, at this point.

                      I think Lawren is correct, but I think there are also some that will never turn red, no matter how long they stay on the vine. They are green, even at their ripest. As I said, confusing.

                        Sounds a bit like marketing spin to me . If you have eaten enough peppers (whatever colour) trust that you will know when they are ready to eat. It's all a bit of trial and error when you first start growing your own but lots of fun and you will soon learn. Meanwhile, it sounds like you need to start collecting lots of recipes for peppers.

                        At the moment I have a glut of lemons, so it's lemon cordial, lemon pudding, lemon meringue pie, lemon slice, frozen juice, frozen zest, candied peel .... well I guess you get the message. Lots of opportunities to be creative .

                            It's not like I even use that many peppers. Don't know what I was thinking. I can make sausage & peppers, but that doesn't take that many peppers. Oy, pepper salad, anyone?

                              I'll have to open up a stand on the main road in my town, and try to peddle my peppers. Same thing with my cucs. Looks like I'm going to have enough to feed the entire town. They took over the garden, so I had to go buy a trellis, and they are now even growing up the side of my house.

                                If you use peppers for cooking, just cut them into the sizes you use and freeze them.
