  • I'm going to gain a million pounds

As most of you know I'm a pretty active person, out and about, ride at least 4 days a week, walk, out. I rarely sit still for very long.

Well I'm seriously laid up for at least 8 weeks. Housebound. Sedintary.

I also quit smoking and drinking, except for 2 half-cigarettes yesterday and one today. The one today made me realize how BORED and restless I am, as I didn't even crave the one with coffee in the morning. So the next time I had one of those cravings I stuck a lollipop in my mouth. I can see this becoming a trend. Who knew Dum-Dum chocolate and rootbeer flavored lollipops were so good?

I spent so long getting down to a weight I was happy with and now this.

    Hey Lawren..we can commiserate together!!!
I'm in the same boat you're in, well I have one leg in the boat. I'm able to get around at least.
No smoking and the hand to mouth thing is getting to me. I usually try to distract myself, plus the doc gave me Ativan to help ...it does!

      Lawren,

I guess the best that you can do is try to watch what you eat. When you stop smoking, you usually gain weight, no matter what. So, you will gain a little more because you're sedentary.

Try and watch what you eat, the best that you can. Lots of veggies!! Think like a rabbit.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Good for you Jericap. I know you smoked about the same as I did so we will cry on each other's shoulders from time to time! How long have you been clean?

Good for you quitting smoking!!! If you could see what cigarettes did to my Mom noone would smoke. I'm not trying to sound like a goody two shoes but I've never put a cigarette in my mouth. That was due to watching my Dad. It's the only bad habit don't have

You are giving up smoking and drinking? Is it because you tend to want to smoke more when you drink (so common), or are you just really trying to punish yourself?

I am hoping PT will get you moving a bit, and that it will help you feel better.

I found that when I quit smoking I also had to stop drinking -for me it was a real trigger, that glass of wine that just went with the cigarette.

However, I got back in fine form not too long after.

And the pounds do NOT have to pile on, you just need to do serrious portion control and possibly change the way you eat - higher on the veggies as Ange said.
Keep it up - stay off the cigarettes. You will get through it. And no you can't have just one, (said by someone who quit at least 5 times and always thought i could just have one...)

I agree with not having just one.....Every time you have that one, the urge to have another just comes right back. It's like having to start all over again. Hang in there, you can get through it.

Since my heart attack on June 4. Drinking does not bother me as I only drink when I go out and you can't smoke indoors in CT. I also never smoked in my house. Driving is bothering me...I drove to NH with my husband this weekend and have to tell you...I wanted a smoke so badly
What should have taken 2.5 hours took almost 3.5 because of traffic. Made it without one though....my poor DH..I told him I hate sitting in traffic, we should have left sooner..yadda, yadda...
He told me I needed patience...UGH! I then explained how I was feeling with no smokes...he didn't say anything else until we arrived at the hotel.

I don't know how this group is on snacking, but I am really into edamame, which are soybeans. It is protein, not sweets, not fats, actually pretty healthy (unless you use too much salt). Great snack, little boiling, or 2-3 minutes in the microwave with a little water, a little sea salt on the top and eat the bean inside. Mmmm. Nummy. I have a bag at work for a snack. Better (well healthier anyway) than candy. I get them at a couple places, Trader Joes for one, Whole Food market for another. Bags are 16 ounces, about $2-3, and have several servings. Keeps you occupied as you dig the bean from the pod, and is good eating.

I'm usually not a snack type of person but when you get right down to it I guess cigarettes have been my "snack" all these years.

I'll need to find a lo/no carb snack and soon.

This morning has been the easiest so far. Haven't even reached for the gum yet.

Funny or perhaps sad that it took a hospital stay for us both to do this. Although mine was not health related I figured why waste a three day start?

I also do not smoke in my house and right now it is extremely difficult to even get out on my deck.

I do not smoke in my car if others are in it but I can see long travel by myself being an issue.

This is definately a hands issue for me. Maybe I'll go find some unfinished needlework to keep me busy as I'm sure the board doesn't need any more of my babbling than it gets now!
