  • A dear friend just died in Mexico

    Friends,

I wanted to share with you why I haven't been online in a few days. A dear friend of mine Pati O'Connor died in Mexico, suddenly and tragically, while on a shopping trip to Tonala and Guadalajara. I got the phone call long distance from her husband who was beside himself. They are both friends I met on the MazInfo yahoo group and then got to know well and befriend as they lived about an hour from me in Georgia. I've known them for two years. They had just sold their house in Georgia and packed up and moved to Mazatlan for retirement. If you recall, I was scheduled to fly down to Maz on Feb 25, and Pati and our friend Billie were going to pick me up at airport. (But my eye surgery caused me to cancel trip.) I would have been with Pati and Billie on their fun trip turned tragic, as they were shopping for colorful talavera tile furnishings and we "Tres Amigas" love that stuff. It is just horrible that this has happened to my friend, her husband and all of us. Ex-pats in Mazatlan or planning to retire there have become very close-knit.

I just wanted to let you know that I'm going to try to help Pati's esposo John in any way possible, and I've already come up with an idea to request donations for charity in Mazatlan in lieu of flowers. I'm not allowed to fly so cannot join them for the viewing, scattering of ashes in the sea, and memorial luncheon. But they know my heart is with them in this very sad time.

    Thanks for listening,

    Carol C.

I am so sorry to hear about the tragic passing of your friend. Life can be unfair, and unpredictable. The love and support that you are giving to your friend will be greatly appreciated.

I will keep them both in my prayers.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

      How horrible!

I know that her husband understands that you are mourning the only way you physically can.

My heart goes out to him and you.

Words at a time like this seem meaningless. It is so hard to lose someone we love. Know that you are surrounded by love at this time.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes. It's really hitting me hard, as Pati was such a blessing to me when I almost died at end of October. And now with my eye surgery, and knowing I almost could have been on that shopping trip with Pati, well, the whole thing is weighing so heavily in my heart. So thank you again for your prayers. Even though you don't know Pati, be assured she was a wonderful soul who took time to help others in our yahoo groups and in person too. She will be missed by many.

Frank, thanks for asking, but no, that website belongs to my friend Carey who lives on Cozumel. This friend, Pati, and her husband John, retired to Mazatlan just a few weeks ago. We've all been sharing retirement dreams and schemes, and even though Pati and John are a bit older than me and hubby, we hit it off and shared a deep love for Mazatlan and for Mexico's people and culture. I met Pati on a yahoo group two years ago, and since she lived an hour from me in Georgia we became good friends in person too. Her death was sudden and tragic, and we're trying to fit the pieces together to learn the actual cause of death. She was diabetic and I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but she took ill and complained of severe gas pains, then she was hospitalized in Guadalajara, released, then took a turn for the worse and she died. Her husband and our friend Billie was with her when she died in Guad. We don't know if there might have been food poisoning or something like that, and John may not get an autopsy, as he said Pati wouldn't want that. But when he called me last night from Mexico he told me he's very curious about exactly what was cause of death. When she died and they took her back to hospital in hopes of possible resusitation, she had lots of blood in her throat and lungs.

Thank you for caring. RIP mi amiga Pati.

                        Pati's last emails to me

                        Friends,

These emails will give you a flavor of how special Pati was, and is in our memories. Thank you for your prayers and kind thoughts.

                        Carol

PATI'S MOST RECENT EMAIL SENT JUST TO ME:

Those darn movers packed my camera, along with ALL John's clothes that were set aside to take and our towels and sheets for Mexico. I'm going to take John's cell to Tonalà, but it's not the same. Will try to send photos of some of the shops and furniture, pots, sinks, etc.

Fast Internet is a revelation. Never knew it could work like this from home. The wireless antenna does have problems with the walls, but we are working around them. We brought our phone base and wireless handsets. One came up missing, but we still have two and the base, so we can answer calls throughout the house on either line. That seems to work well. Lingo is clear as talking in the US.

We postponed Tonalà one day so we can pay taxes before the end of the month. We'll leave Tuesday. This is a trip we should be taking together. We'll miss you. John has to stay in case our goods arrive, so it would have been just the Tres Amigas.

                        Pati

MESSAGE BEFORE THAT SENT TO PATI'S CLOSEST FRIENDS AND RELATIVES INCLUDING ME:

We rolled into Mazatlan 5 days ago with our friend Billie following in her truck. We are all temporarily in a rental house a block from the main Plaza awaiting the remodeling of my sister's bar into a house. Once that is finished, we'll move there while our house is renovated. All three houses are within walking distance of each other.

John and I have our resident visas. What is left of our household goods after selling, donating, and tossing is enroute from Atlanta to Mazatlan expected to arrive in about 3 weeks.

Our days are pretty full right now paying property taxes and utility bills, checking in with immigration, cleaning and stocking the house, checking on our house on Venus where the roof is being remodeled, and looking for parking, We have items to deliver to folks who asked us to bring them things. Once we're all caught up, we'll be able to relax into Mexican time.

Tuesday, we head for Tonalà to search for sinks, tiles, doors, pots, whatever we think we might need. We will return about 3/8.

We have a VOIP service with a number in Denver. If you wish to call us, dial it as you would if calling Denver. The number is xxx.

We also have a Mazatlan phone. The number is xxx.

Carnaval is in full swing. Big fireworks tonight from a ship in Olas Altas bay to represent a battle where Mexico defeated the French. We all want to see it, but starts after 2230 and we're already sleepy at 2100. Loads of vendors line the streets. Beer tents everywhere. Lots of happy faces. Music through most of the night. The papers say Carnaval brings up to 300,000 additional people into the city.

If you would like to see some photos, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MazRandR/. The homepage has a picture of the Queen contenders.

http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/Maz...os/browse/7750 shows some of the whimsical statues that have been erected for Carnaval.

http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/Maz...os/browse/eb9d shows some of the first day. LOTS of bands.

We love Mexico, especially Mazatlan, and are happy to be here.

                        Love you all.

                        Pati
