  • Nurses and Drs- Am I allergic to...?

I have just finished some boneless buffalo wings (mild of course) and my hair is wet, my forehead is dripping with sweat and it is running down my face.

Sure, I can understand there are spices in a buffalo sauce that could cause that, but what about apple pie? I can have apple pie alamode and have a milder reaction to the one described above. Same for Chinese food, Pizza, etc. Sometimes when we are eating, my wife will look up at me and say 'are you sweating from this...?

For our first date, the future girlfriend and then future wife and I went to restaurant. I had a nice chimichanga and in just a couple bites, I was an embarrassment to the poor girl. And yet, she married me-go figure.

So is it just my Norwegian background, or is there a mild allergy to something?

    Just curious.

BTW-I can do anything outside in the summer that involves moving around, and I am wet. I put down some multch when it was 55 degrees, and my shirt was...gross. Any big project takes a half gallon of gatorade. Maybe I just have huge sweat glands.

    Sorry for the bad subject.

And your doctor says? If you haven't mentioned it, you really ought to. In fact, tell her/him all the times it happens, like what you detailed in the post, since they aren't all food related.

Have you ever been referred to an endocrinologist? I think I'd ask about it.

Of course it's cause you're a Norwegian. If you were Swedish, as I am, you wouldn't have any problem with spicy food. We Swedes go to Thai restaurants and send back the 5* plates because they aren't spicy enough!! If you could grow good jalapeños near the Arctic Circle, Swedish meatballs would actually be tasty. But the Norwegians, they would have only done something silly with jalapeños, like stuffing them with boiled eel.

But I digress. I agree with Fern - get it checked so you know to what you are allergic. It's good information to have, and it's possible the allergy will intensify as you get older.

Does it really sound like an allergy? What could be in chicken wings AND a chimichanga AND apple pie a la mode? Other than sugar, I guess? Or wheat flour? I'm not really seeing dairy in the chimichanga--or did it have cheese in it? Vintner, do you get this reaction from other foods? How about dairy products?

Is it ALL apple pie, all chicken wings, all chimichangas? Is it every time you eat?

Some people do sweat more than others, of course. I'm always cold, and I used to work with a guy who was always hot. On the first warm day in spring, I would be all happy because I was finally toasty, and he would walk in, soaking wet, having walked a block from the subway.

I agree you should talk to your doctor. If you've had this situation all your life, it seems unlikely to be life-threatening, but the doctor may have a way to make you more comfortable. Good luck!

I will have the problem with a few types of foods, but to much less degree. I have cerial every morning, gotta have my Cheerios in the morning-no problem. I can eat cheese on a sandwich with no problem. Dairy isn't it. Chocolate-rich deserts and yes, there is a flush to the face and some moisture.

All chimmies?-yes. All wings-no, depends on the seasoning. I made pulled pork couple weeks ago, used lots of mustard, couple types of peppers, brown sugar, salt and smoked that about 10 hours. As I was eating it with BBQ sauce, I thought it bland and had no problems with sweat.

As far as food, I can't pin it down easily.

My wife does most of the lawn mowing. If I have to mow, I have to wear a sweat band, it just runs down my face and drips off my nose. I do the snow blowing. Often, I will have my coat open because I am hot and sweaty.

The dog likes to sleep next to me in the winter-I am just hot stuff .

My actual body temp is a degree low, but I am a warm guy.

I'll have to ask the Dr if some of the pills I am on may enhance the problem. Maybe it is drugs and nothing else.

Maybe it's two separate problems that have the same result? But yeah, I think you need to see a doctor and probably an endocrinologist. You might need to take something more balanced than Gatorade to help you recover. It sounds like this has been a problem for a long time, but now it's getting worse and bothering you more.

I do have a temporary beard. Our wine club is at the Ref Fest on Sunday. I am in costume (beard part of it) pouring wine and hoping my wine does well in the competition. Beard comes off after Sunday's event. But that is about as hairy as I get. I have a 'clean back'.

Funny thing is, I am 3/4 German and 1/4 Norwegian, but the Norwegian Mother did the cooking. Maybe that influenced my body.

I could write pages on this but will make fairly brief, a good resource to start with would be An Alternative Approach to Allergies by Theron Randolph. Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Balch and Balch may also help. Most doctors will overmedicate you with the wrong stuff. Green Tea helps. 9 to 12 servings of veg and fruits a day. University of Michigan has a website on the healing food pyramid UMIM: Healing Food Pyramid
Find a holistic doc or a member of the American Academy of Environmental medicine. I went to a traditional allergist for a few years (They generally don't have a clue) I am allergic to wheat and corn among other things. Wheat is fairly easy to see on ingredients it is in soy etc. Things that say natural flavors may be from wheat also. But corn syrup and corn is in most processed foods, corn syrup is cheap and manufacturers use a lot of it. Corn and wheat are both members of the grass family and so is cane sugar (BUt Not beet sugar)

My guess is corn may be your problem. Licking the sticky on an envelope even produces a reaction for me.

I am also allergic to many types of mold. Commercially produced citric acid comes mostly from aspergillosis or corn. BHT may also come from corn. Mannitol, sorbitol, and Xlyitol all may come from corn.
I also have problems with some pork that is pumped chemicals added to it to make it tender I am ok with the natural types. Chickens or turkeys in a solution also make me sick. But if it is water only it is fine.
I wash all fruits and vegetables with a fruit and veg wash I buy at Trader Joes FOr instance apples used to make me sick. Some growers use wax that is from petroleum sources and that makes me ill.

I have a hard time eating processed foods. MSG is awful.

Not completely sure what this is. Pretty sure that it's not an allergy. Allergies tend to cause throat swelling, shortness of breath, and hives. Certain medications could interact with Tyramine, which is in some of the foods mentioned (but not all) and cause your symptoms.

About 5% of the population suffers from excessive sweating: hyperhydrosis. Sometimes this can be treated with medications. In severe cases, they actually snip some of the sympathetic nerve fibers in the chest which is almost always curative. (These fibers aren't involved in sensation or movement, just things we can't control.) That's what I'd put my money on (without knowing what medications, exactly which foods, etc. or being able to perform a physical exam). Probably things that might cause anyone to sweat (or that ramps up the sympathetic nervous system) just make you sweat more since you already sweat more than most. Just my opinion.

I think dude may have the answer, it is just a reaction, mild is all cases. I can live with the problem. I just won't sit with Frank and eat those wings, I actually don't think Frank would want me at the same table going through several napkins to mop up my face.

It may be a partial reaction to some of my meds, it may be I am just unusual.

It is no big deal. I was just wondering if rich chocolate desserts and even mild spicy foods would cause the same reaction. Guess it just a trait that I have.

Corn is a good thought...there's corn syrup in so, so many prepared foods.

                              Allergies

Interesting thread for me. I just have been diagnosed with gluten, casein and (after a 2nd test) soy allergies by a specialized lab.I think there is something else, too. Maybe egg, I don't know.

My Dad was an allergist. The guru on my new health bbs says allergists aren't good for food allergies and suggests an elimination diet. I have lost 5 pounds from all this. I just am afraid to eat. It was manageable before soy came into the equation......
