The 10 Most Disappointing Treats for Trick-or-Treaters
Posted Wed, Oct 15, 2008, 10:39 am PDT

On Halloween night, some houses struggle with the idea of candy. There are good houses, and there are bad houses. The best trick-or-treaters know to avoid the latter. At the food site Serious Eats, we all love Halloween, but wish certain homes would just stop handing out the classically bad "treats." They weren't good last year, the year before that, or now. Our own Erin Zimmer put together this list of our top 10 Halloween treats that nobody wants...

    Toothbrushes
Dentists and orthodontists should not be allowed to celebrate Halloween if they're going to get all tooth doctory on us. Do not bring your work home with you, folks! We all have a personal responsibility to brush, and maybe some of us will forget, but your complimentary bristles on a stick (instead of a Snickers) will not help us remember. It will make us despise you and your trade.

    Raisins
Little boxes of stuck-together shriveled globs are not what little kids schlep around the neighborhood for all night. When they say trick-or-treat, they want candy that will rot their teeth, not wrinkled grapes. (Using an empty box as a kazoo-like instrument, though, is kinda fun.)

    Candy Corn
The most polarizing candy of all. The fruitcake of Halloween; it just never goes away. If you love them, fine. But don't subject the rest of us haters to the sickeningly sweet triangle that tastes like neither candy nor corn.

    Smarties and Necco Wafers
These chalky candies are supposedly "fruit-flavored," but no fruit I know tastes like dust -- and makes everything eaten after taste like dust, too.

    Dum Dum Lollipops
Usually, foods on a stick are yummy (corn dogs, ice pops), but Dum Dums just can't be included on that list. Not even if they were breaded and deep-fried and served at a fair.

    Apples
Long before "poisoned candy" scares, evil people were handing out apples instead of candy on Halloween. This disappointing "treat" is the main reason to avoid unwrapped food while trick-or-treating.

    Tootsie Rolls
It looks like chocolate and sort of smells like chocolate, but the mini brown tubes are not real chocolate. They taste like watered-down chocolate, and have a chewy texture that will strip the fillings right off your molars.

    Miscellaneous, Wrapped Hard Candies
Halloween is supposed to be a holiday for young people, not senior citizens who suck on hard candies all day. Something about the strawberry-shaped strawberries, gold-wrapped butterscotch, and peppermint feels past the expiration date. (These usually get set aside for Granny.)

    Laffy Taffy
I do not laffy when I get these. I sobby. I get depressedy. Because it gets all stucky to my teethy and doesn't even taste that goody.

    Anything Fun-Sized
Who started calling it this? Since when is one bite fun?! Give us the rich houses with the sprawling driveways and full-sized candy bars any day. Portion control doesn't need to start this young.

I agree....None of them sound like much fun to me, except maybe the tootsie roll.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Root beer Dum Dums are among the Big Five Saved for Mom around here, along with Mounds/Almond Joys, Twizzlers, Heath Bars, and Almond Roca.

I don't need to tell you that fun-sized Almond Roca is a rare treat indeed, and I had to go to four different stores to find Halloween Heath Bars. My DH took them away from me, annoyingly saying that they should be saved for Halloween. I was like, "Are you nuts? These are to bribe the crummy candy away from OUR kids so we can recycle that candy into the giveaway bowl!"

There were many on that list that I like, including the candy corn and those wrapped little sucker sweet / sour candies. Wish I knew the name.

Back when I was much younger, I used to stick halloween candy up my little clip-on tie and use the little inside point of the tie to hold in the candy. I would sit in church and eat candy from my tie.

I think I have my spot reserved in the warmer sections when I die.

I never heard of Laffy Taffy...I love Tootsie Rolls! I remember we had an older couple that lived down the street when we were kids. They used to pretend to give us nickels, told everyone it was money...but it turned out to be useless metal discs...and they wondered why their doorbell always rang a lot at Halloween.

For several years I've given each kid 3 Halloween pencils, tied with curling ribbon. The younger kids love them. The teens and pre-teens aren't quite as excited.

I think because they use pens!

We used to hate to get pennies - some people would give you 3 or 4. I also hated those chewy candies that were wrapped in either orange or black wax paper - ugh.

Last year we gave "eyeballs". They are sugary, but the kids got a kick out of them. They are jelly-like and fruit flavored.

I like to give those weird candies that look like little hamburgers and hot dogs. On the hamburger, there's a separate piece for the bottom bun, then the patty, then the tomato, then the lettuce, then the top bun. They're like Barbie-sized food.

I love tootsie rolls but I give mini snickers bars to the older kids and lolly pops (dum dum) for the little tykes. If I run out of kids before I run out of candy bars, not a problem. My favorite.

Whacky where do you shop for candy? Never heard of the hot dog and hamburger candy

I think I've gotten the food candy at Rite Aid. It used to be very expensive and only came in little packs from Japan. Now they sell big honkin' bags of all different little food items. They're so cute! They have pizzas, french fries in red-paper cups, and ice cream cones, too.

Here's what the hamburgers look like...don't know if you can see from this pic. They're gummy, but they're not clear like most gummy candies.

The ones I see around here are more like the bottom two on this page, because the little hamburgers and hot dogs are all assembled and then placed in tiny clear-plastic dishes, and the whole thing is in a tiny individual pack. Definite overpackaging.
