Thank you to all the Veterans out there, old and young! Despite the politics, these men and women deserve our gratitude for a job well done during both peace and conflict.

I am a Veteran of the Vietnam Era, the Cold War, and Gulf War I, with lots of time afloat in areas like the North Sea, the Black Sea, and the Persian Gulf during these conflicts. Luckily, I never saw a shot fired in anger, although I have experienced many dangerous life threatening events in preparation/training where I've seen limbs lost, etc.

I have a parent who spent all of WWII fighting in the South Pacific, In-Law who was the youngest Army Officer to fight his way ashore at Normandy (commissioned out of high school), and cousins who were Special Forces throughout the Cold War and on the ground in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. I appreciate them all for what they have done. If you have relatives who have served, please call them today.

Spence, thank you for your part in defense of our nation. I will pass on your greetings to my husband as he is a retired Marine and had his "other birthday" yesterday! We are off to the Birthday Ball this coming Friday.... it will be a first for me because we did not meet/marry until he was retired so I have not had the pleasure. John now works contract and he is the only outsider/retiree that is not active duty who was invited to squadron ball. Our seating formation at the formal dinner is beside the chaplin - guess we will have to behave
PS my son's waiver at the USNA is in the final leg. Had the waiver appointment and it has gone thur DoDMERB and then posted for review to USNA has gone thru several channels there and this week will be presented to the Superintendent for his review this week.... Will let you know the outcome. Hope to hear from this by the end of the month.

For those needing to know, the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day...

Memorial Day honors servicemembers who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle. Deceased veterans are also remembered on Veterans Day but the day is set aside to thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime.

Went in when (and because) the hostages were taken in 1980 (or maybe it was late '79), was was listening to the radio when the rescue attemp failed, choppers crashed and lives were lost. Very tough to be in basic training and to hear news like that.

I didn't serve as long as some of those who have listed their time, like Spence and Bing. My respect to those guys, and anyone who served. At work, I am the only one in the office part, and maybe the whole building, who has served.

Proudest moment: Flying into Hanoi, Vietnam, in the mid 90's and picking up the remains of 7 American servicemembers and returning them to Hawaii where they would be identified so that there families could put that part of their life to rest. We had a ceremony in Vietnam, another in Guam which is the first US territory and another one for them when we landed in Honolulu.

Mu husband Kevin; USAF 1980 - 2006.
He flew a similar mission to Vietnam from Travis in the mid 80's.
My father was in the army at the battle of the bulge in WWII.
My older brother served in Vietnam late 60's.

I am always grateful and most thankful to all who serve and served.
That includes my gratitude to their family members as well.

No combat or forward areas, but am Navy Nurse Corps here.
Army and Navy hospital wards and clinics only. It pales.

3rd Armored Division "Spearhead" 1973 -1975

Unfortunately the "3rd Heard" was disbanded after beating the Republican Guard. Our mission was to protect the Fulda Gap, the area where we thought the Soviets would attack from Berlin into West Germany. Little trivia..Elvis was a soldier in the 3rd Heard.

My prayers and thoughts go out to all the service men and women putting thier lives on the line for our great country. Let's all pray they come back safe.

As I write this, on the Biography Channel, there is a tribute story to the nurses who served in Vietnam.

I am currently in Oahu, and I spent part of the day at the Punchbowl Cemetery. I located the names of my Father's aircrewman, Aviation Radioman 2C Louis F. Jakubec, who was killed in a mid air collision when my Father's plane was struck from behind by another squadron plane, and one of the fighter pilots, Lt(jg) Louis Davis, who was shot down and killed during the rescue of my Father from Kagoshima Bay, Japan.
