    I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering
apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly
and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too
exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a
little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't
want her to know that I hadn't been walked today.
Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't
want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't
feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look
forward to and want to make a difference in someone's
    life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at
me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the
bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she
    was desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure
her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and
her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her
arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to
always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I
could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I
was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many
more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So
many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

    I rescued a human today.

My rescues are not dogs but cats but they have rescued me more than I have them.

My really feral rescue lived a very difficult life, in a cage for 6 months with 3 brothers and sisters. Clean litter box, clean water, food and NO HUMAN CONTACT. Out of 4 kittens only one was "adoptable" thru our program here in Rockland County. "C"are "A"bout "T"he "S"trays. His sisters my best buddy "K" kept.

Shiloh lives with us and has for over a year now. Sometimes I can pet him if he comes to me and asks. My greatest joy is seeing this animal playing with toys, chirping (stray/feral kittens don't ever learn to meow) and playing with my other adoptee Cougar, a lot of our TS4Ms regulars know Cougar's story. He is also a CATS foster kitten that never left my house.

I guess what I am really saying is, if you have room for a pet in your home and your heart, go to your local shelter or a reputable rescue service and give a pet that really NEEDS you a chance and a good life with a loving family.

All of my babies for the last 20 years have been rescues. I can't love them anymore than any purebred. They are sweet and joyful to get a real home. Thanks for posting.

Must confess I got a bit misty too

Good post JoAnn and a nice reminder of the love our furry friends give us.

For many reasons this is especially true for me, for our felines and for my puppy.

Mostly my puppy the past year.

This was a great post for animal lovers like ourselves!

Three years ago we decided it was time to get a dog to go with our new home. After donating to animal rescue for ten years I could not believe the hassle going to the Stockton shelter and the Tracy shelter to find a pet.

Made four trips with my young daughter to get small or med size dog and left all times with nothing.

During this time we found four dogs that we wanted and was told still being checked out or waiting list or dog spoken for. It seems they always wanted to force us into a large dog we did not want.

We even had our name on list at Pet Smart for two years because once a month they brought dogs in for showings.

At this point we decided to get our first choice and paid for a pure bread Sheltie because the best dog I ever owned was a female sheltie years earlier and our male this time is a great, smart family member.

The sad part is now our Tracy shelter has taken in so many animals that they put them to sleep after only four days. My wife knows I like boxer dogs and showed me the local paper yesterday with sad picture of two boxers (probably eight months old) turned in. We talked it over of having a second dog because Dallas (Sheltie) seems to be spoiled and not happy with another family member. Couple times we took him over to neighbors home that wanted to find a home for their dog and Dallas just turned his back and wanted nothing to do with another dog.

We called the shelter yesterday asking about one of the boxers and was told their brother and sister and should both go to same home. This takes us off the table.

It is sad that they seem to want families to come give these dogs a home and then find reasons to stop you from doing this!

I know its hard when your losing your homes and jobs but still wonder how anyone that loves and considers the pet family can do this and walk away knowing in four days the pet is
                killed!

The boss would turn me in before the dog!

Thanks for the lovely story. Our first dog was a rescue. He was the most lovable pet I have ever had. He was 15 when we had to put him down from liver cancer. I couldn't walk down the pet food aisle of our local grocery store for a year! He was our first baby and to this day, we still miss him. We now have another rescue who is also very lovable. I have a hard time understanding how some people can discard their pets like trash or abandon them. When I'm old, I'll probably be one of those crazy people who have like 50 dogs to care for!

I have never had anything but rescued pets. All lived long happy lives with us, and although each had their own distinct personality, all were very loving.
Our current dog, Ruby Tuesday, is a purebred german sheperd, but nonetheless a rescue. She was 2 when we got her, unsocialized with animals and people. She went through all kinds of abuse, they thought she had even been hanged....hard to place her because of size and uncertainty for her behavior. She was not too agressive, and it took us 6 months to be able to actually pet her without her flinching. After learning she could trust us, she blossomed into the most beautiful sweet goofy dog. She is 7 now, and a very happy girl. We had been broken hearted over the loss of our 13 year old "Disney dog" two years before Ruby found and rescued us...

Coincidentally, I went to pick up hollyhock seeds Mr. and Mrs. Libraria had left for us the last time they were here, and we could not get together. We recently lost a cat that one of our other cats was very attached to, that had taken it in as a stray kitten and mothered.

We had been talking about get Spook another Blackie, because he is so lonely now.

When I picked up the seeds, that couple offered me a black kitty. We are now in the do they really want to give her up and do we really want another cat phase.

Most people don't understand and appreciate birds, so they don't come up much in conversations like this. At one time I had 42 birds.

I had a parrot, Vinny, that I had to give up to friends because of a move, and because he would take a plug out of the ear lobe of every female he landed on. Years later when I saw him again, he came right to my shoulder and frantically started kissing me, pecking at my ear lobe but not biting.

We have one bird now, Wally, who was the last bird at a Wal Mart back in the city, before the Wal Mart moved to a new and bigger store, which they have done again.

Birds are for a very long time.

We had a cockatiel, Willie, who wasn't getting much attention so we gave him to friends who were wanting a pet, but couldn't deal with losing another dog. They were still grieving several years after the loss of their dog. Willie is now going on 21 or 22. They said he's starting to show signs of age but he's given them lots of attention and laughs over the years. We moved and we're about a 6 hour drive away so we don't see them very often but the last time I was there, as soon as Willie heard my voice, he went crazy. His little bird brain remembered my voice after not hearing it for a couple of years!!

We have a parrot rescue association in the next town over. We have other bird loving friends and I've told them about the rescue group. No one wants another bird at this time, and they aren't willing to help out as volunteers either.

My husband has refused to let me consider working at a shelter because we'd have a houseful of dogs if I did.

JLB, of course you want another kitty! I'd love to have kitties and have had many in my life, but my husband is allergic to them. We have a 14 yr. old sheltie, Tori, we got when she was the runt of the litter. Have spent thousands on her vet bills over the years, but she is SO WORTH IT. We also have a cockatiel, Newby, who is about 9 yrs. old. He has the "flight of the house", loves to come flying around and land on my head. He is a joy to be with; most people don't realize how much personality a bird can have. He tells us all the time that he is a "pretty, pretty bird."

Glad you got the hollyhock seeds; hubby would populate the whole State of Missouri with them if he could

Our Wally has the run of the master bathroom, and loves to yell at Jenny when she's in there.

Funny about your friends where you stay. We got talking about where we live and it turns out they have friends who live here too . . . the leader of the Great Dock Dispute.

So, I said, "Since you know about the dock, I am the Bad Neighbor." We were having a good laugh, cuz they could tell there's no way I could be a bad neighbor . . . well, without there being a very good reason.
