  • Do y'all Yankees eat vegetables?

I meant to post this last fall when I I went to the Pokeynose but forgot and just got back from eating lunch where I had delicious meatloaf, mash potatoes, greens and cornbread. I could have chosen from another 8 or so veggies.

When I was in the Pokeys I tried to find a diner or restaurant similar to this but no luck even when I went to a place that had diner in it's name. The food was delicious but there were no veggies, no green beans even!! The only thing I could find that was green was a salad. I guess I'll have to move up there and open my own little restaurant .

I'm a Yankee from NY and we eat plenty of vegetables. NY diners have lots of vegetable choices.

You can't tell what the food is like in the Northeast from the Poconos. Even those of us who love going there will tell you that it's not a great place for restaurants.

There were plenty of good restaurants, just no home cookin ones. No meat & threes. I noticed the same thing in Vermont as well. Good breakfasts tho. Me thinks you have to grow a big garden like Tony to get your veggies. shaggy

I love veggies, and easily get any veggie that I like on Long Island. In fact, many veggies are grown locally, and sold at stands, as well as markets......No problem getting any veggie in the city, either....Anything that you want, it's there. It must be a Pocono thing.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

It must be a Pocono thing. Here on the Cape we have lots of farming, ok, not huge farms, but lots of farm stands and nice, fresh local veggies. Usually, when I'm cookingwe have two veggies (one green, one not) and often a salad too, along with the meat...but then I grew up in the South.....

Shaggy, I'm actually kind of offended that you would say this. I know you're kidding, but....

DH & I grew up in the North and have always eaten veggies (well, most of them anyway. DH has always had some type of garden and then one we have here in FL is getting bigger (we just grow them opposite of when they do up north) and we shouldn't have to buy much of anything this winter and I'll probably have to freeze or can some of them. I have always found that Southerners eat DIFFERENT veggies than us Yankees do. I had never heard of Black Eyed Peas, Collard or Mustard greens and I still don't like them, no matter how they are cooked.

Add enough Bacon or Ham Hock to any veg and it will taste good.

Well, I live in the Poconos and I eat veggies. The diner I go to has all kinds of vegs on the menu. They have their standard ones that are printed in the menu and then everyday they usually have a couple of additional choices. They make the best soups too, especially vegetable barley.

A Ham Hock is a smoked pork shank. It isn't as big as a lamb shank, but it is meaty and flavorful. People use it to flavor their beans, black eyed peas, or greens. It used to be inexpensive (or years ago even free), and people in the South used it for seasoning.

As long as we're going there, in addition to using ham hocks, my MIL used to pickle pig feet as well. She didn't buy them in a jar, but made them herself. She was born in Italy, but she grew up in Arkansas.

If you dont like the idea of ham hocks, you can actually use turkey Italian Sausage (if you can find it) or regular Turkey Sausage to season most of the items above.

Now, Wacky, I certainly didn't mean to offend you, maybe I should have said how come there is no home cooking type restaurants in the area. I know you guys eat veggies because when we talk about gardening tons of you plant tons of veggies.

There is a point made of maybe we eat different types, such as black eyed peas, greens, okra, pintos . When I ate at restaurants the only thing I could find was mashed potatoes and that was usually made with garlic (yuck, or to say it more politically correct, that is not to my liking )

Pat, I sure wish I had thought to ask you for recommendations b4 I left. I absolutely loved Sam Sneeds tavern.

Right now I'm soaking pintos overnight to make pintos with a ham bone for seasoning. This is to go with stew beef and rice. I can't wait. Will be sharing the beans with my neighbors as I'm making a big pot full.!! Yummy
